Last Thursday evening we went out to dinner with another couple. (Our area was expecting a snow storm later that night, temps in the 20's, etc.)
After we were seated the waitress came over, introduced herself (the usual banter), distributed the menus, and asked if we wanted water. I specifically asked for: water-no-ice. A minute later she returns with four glasses of water-with-ice. I (politely) reminded her that I had requested no ice... She quickly replaced my water. I never have water-with-ice, no matter what the temperature it is outside.... It's year-round for me.
When we returned home I got to thinking about how many times I specifically ask for no ice but get "iced" anyway.... It happens to me about 90% of the time!
It's almost like a waiter/waitress is programed to ice....
Breakfast places in my area seem to get it and don't provide ice water "automatically" but lunch and dinner places.....
A question for those of you in colder climates: Do you "automatically" get served ice-water even when it's really-cold outside??
My wife thinks that I'm weird.... btw: I drink hot coffee in the summer....

Is she wrong? My wife thinks I'm weird too. Whenever she told me that I asked her what kind of masochist she was to have married me. BTW, I drink hot coffee in the summer as well.

You’re fighting routine. I drink iced tea, no lemon. And I almost always need to pick the damn thing out of the glass, and in bad cases ask for a replacement because it’s everywhere.

In restaurants I always ask for soda with no ice. Water not so much. At home I drink a lot of green tea with ice.

Coffee is a hot drink as far as I'm concerned.
I prefer water with no ice as well, but have pretty much given up on trying to get it in restaurants. As for iced tea or soda, my preference is for it to be cold, but without ice - this combo is hard to find, so I often just go with ice as it still beats the alternative, which is barely cool.

My wife always orders water with no ice and almost always she gets ice, or the lemon thing. Like HD says it must be a routine.

Around here it's just routine for servers to bring ice waters for everyone at the table. I think it would be hard for a server to break habit and bring one without ice, but it is their job.
There aren't too many cold drinks that I like without ice: beer, milk, wine...not sure what else.
I drink hot coffee in the summer all the time. Not like my FIL, who will be working hot sweaty work outside in 100 degree temps and take a break for coffee.
I also like iced coffee too.

I do ice year around, no matter what climate. Same with coffee. I remember when I was about 5 years old watching the hired lumberjacks clearing the land where my dad would build the cottage. Hot blazing Canadian summer sun and they had a little fire going for their coffee. Said it helped them sweat and sweating kept them cool.

If you look at the hostess station at most any restaurant they'll have several pitchers of ice water lined up for service. It's just the default. It's annoying when they don't pick up on a specific request -- but it sounds like she corrected the oversight without an issue.
I start every day with a 16 oz Yeti cup of ice water -- I drink it while I'm watching the "news" and waiting for the coffee to brew.
The only thing I absolutely will not add ice to is a good Single Malt.

Any non-alcoholic drink that is served cold comes with ice by default. Doesn’t matter what the weather is.

Nothing sacred there -- if something needs cooling down you do what you gotta do.

Milk is an exception to the rule above, although I can’t even say when the last time I drank a glass of milk was.

Have not been out to eat in...years. ice water sounds typical. A sales rep who used to take me out for lunch would emphatically request water with lemon on the side. Then squeeze the lemon into the water...rationale was they prolly didn't wash lemons.

Where I live its warm in winter, 74 degree day today, so it's not unusual to be served iced water. Never thought about it, but family members don't like cold water and always make a point of ordering water without ice.
