Inspired, somewhat by a couple of 'tube e threads, I have another ! ! After experiencing the new acquisition of an old amp, the 1484, I love the growl it can produce at even low volume. Especially with my LP. But then, I started thinking that all but one tube in this amp is as old as the amp itself which is over 50 years old and maybe that growl I'm getting is due to tired tubes. One would think that after all this time the tubes would have been changed an number of times. However, this amp came to me as advertised, in mint condition. As if I just bought from Sears. Be that as it may, I have ordered new tubes, all 8, from The Tube Store out of Hamilton, Omicron...er...Ontario, Caner...Canan...Canada . I'm a bit surprised by how quick I will get these new tubes [today! ] as I ordered them on the 10th. The other reason for replacing these tubes is to preserve them being as old as they are and still performing. Can I say it? Well, here it comes anyway: They don't make'm like that no more! I'm also curious to see if I lose the wonderful growl of this amp. Very curious. Wow! No sooner do I finish this post and the tubes arrive! Eat your heart out Port of San Pedro!

Replaced all the tubes in the Twin Twelve and it performs as it did with the old tubes in it so apparently, the old tubes were all good with the exception of the tube or tubes [don't know how many it gets] for the reverb. It improved somewhat as the shrillness of the reverb is a bit less and more tolerable. At any rate, no bad tubes in the new batch.

I have a 1485. The reverb in these amps is notorious, Mine doesn't even work. Jim

You have the one that has twice the wattage as mine and the reverb is notorious for chalkboard like sound. I think it has something to do with it having its own separate operation. I'm tempted to find someway to subdue its shrillness throughout its operation. As it is, it is somewhat operational if you don't go past the '4' mark but, replacing the tube(s) for it made a bit of a difference. Outside of that, this is a truly remarkable amp.

If the reverb uses a 12AX7 or 12AT7 you might try Tungsol. They produce a fatter tone

I use s stand alone reverb, an Ampeg EJ-12-A from the 60's. Gets wet enough to make you roll up your pants. Jim
