Until a couple of days ago, I was unaware of the dust up over AT&T and Verizon's expansion of 5G cellular service near airports.
"Aviation regulators and airlines repeatedly raised concerns that the new technology would interfere with safety equipment used to determine a plane’s altitude. The telecommunications industry has countered that regulators and airlines have had years to prepare for 5G."
Sounds like a playground dispute, until I get my head around the threatened calamity voiced by the aviation experts versus the cavalier "too late, you had your chance" attitude of the phone companies.
What's the opinion of Moe's aviators and engineers? Is this another "let's just try it and see what happens," experiment like Boeing's foray into making 757's behave like roller coasters?

I'm looking at it as worst case. Airplanes landing hard, at least, is more dangerous than ATT and Verizon still using 4G a little longer.

The argument "you had time to prepare" is like oil companies that cause Oil spill telling the community "you had time to prepare". It is a false argument. It does not seem like the phone companies are denying the possibly tragic consequences of 5G, just putting the responsibility on the airlines. How great are the benefits of 5G and who profits off of it ? Hmmm

It sounds like basically the same thing as when the FCC obsoleted millions(?) of wireless microphones by revoking the frequency bands used by them and then auctioning off said frequencies to the cellular industry. I know our church and I were required to abandon perfectly good wireless equipment and purchase new replacements. However, in this case, the problem/stakes are higher.
I don't know who exactly is at fault here, except that it sounds like typical inter-govt agency screwup. I would put most of the blame on the FCC. I assume the FCC knew that some of the proposed 5G frequencies were being used by aviation. How much warning did they give the FAA? Changing/modifying radio equipment in all of our planes can't happen overnight.

"The telecommunications industry has countered that regulators and airlines have had years to prepare for 5G."
Seems to me the onus is on the telecoms to create a technology that doesn't screw with others.

Is this just the Ultra 5G?
There is 5G out there now at airports. I know from experience.

Here's more info that should further this conversation: I n telecommunications, 5G is the fifth generation technology standard for broadband cellular networks, which cellular phone companies began deploying worldwide in 2019, and is the planned successor to the 4G networks which provide connectivity to most current cellphones. WikipediaWhat is the airlines complaint again? I saw the report about this on the news moments ago and all I can say is it would seem the Airlines were caught with their pants down. 5G been around for a couple of years now.

Neighbor across the fence: "Man, I told ya 2 years ago I was installing a 70" water main into my house. You've had plenty of time to replumb your house."

I would just like to mention that my connection to the internet is via Aris DB-75 5G. Been that way for sometime now. Uh, same for I iPhone. Hmmm, I'm more modern than the airlines!

Remember that overly-egotistical and competitive guy named Dick Wagging?
This it that.
Both sides are accusing the other of failing to disclose information in a manner timely enough for proper studies to be completed.

There is 400Mhz between the top of the C-band alloyed to the phone carriers and the bottom of the airlines altimeters on some aircraft.
Is it that tough to find out if there are harmonics bleeding over?

Even when I bailed off of the treadmill 9 years ago, I had had enough of where one technology meets another and both sides stand there with their hands up saying "not my fault". Of course my world was office equipment, like where suddenly 400 multifunctional printers drop off line after a network update and suddenly its our units that are "broken".
Gah, I'd be happy off line and burning wood for heat, maybe even helping Roly shovel some snow. Technology has remapped our brains, and I don't think for the better.

Well safe landings seem a little more critical...that plus 5G causing Covid indicates an open and shut case to me.
