I got a propane delivery this morning. I could see that his truck was brandy new -- so when he was done pumping I walked out with him to check it out. There was a sticker on the rear bumper that read "Automatic Chains". I'd never heard the term so he showed me the gear underneath and explained how it worked -- fascinating, but I couldn't help thinking about all the stuff that could break. Anyway, I had no idea such a thing existed.
167 gallons @ 4.25/gal -- ouch. A month ago it was 3.85/gal. Thanks.

Very clever!
I'm not mechanical, do those things spin at a constant rate?

It's an idler system. The chainwheel is driven by the truck's rear tires. It spins at a rate proportional to the speed of the tires.

Beauty in its simplicity.

These have become pretty common on school busses where the weather makes chains necessary.
