Our German Shepherd puppy is 11 months old now. Any time I leave he goes wild on my return. Hopping and leaping around me. So yesterday I come home from therapy to this warm welcome and all of the sudden he just stops still and stands all the way up on his hind legs a licks me right on the lips. He is a really affectionate dog...puppy. over 100 lb now. Good thing my wife is not jealous. Man I love dogs!

Upon my return, our dogs are: first: absolutely indignant that I went someplace...anyplace...and didn't take them next: overjoyed that I'm back (the "we thought you died" syndrome).
Emotional animals, dogs...

dogs are great... we always had a bunch on the farm and i enjoyed coming home. no matter how bad a day at work i had the way they greeted me always made me feel better. i made a point of touching and speaking to each and every one. i see the neighbors come in and their dogs jumping around, wiggling all over glad to see them only to be ignored by the neighbor as they go into the house. poor dogs... i don't mind being licked, but not in the face... the pup i have now is a lover... she wants to be in my face but the closest i let her get is cleaning out my ears. what we used to call wet willies i think

Nothing cuter than a German Shepherd pup.

Didn't he play the German Shepherd in that one? And no, I am not a fan of getting my face licked. I realize their mouth and nose is pretty much how they relate to the world and will tolerate some kicking of hands etc. He snuck this one in. The whole standing and leaning in and sneaking one was pretty cute tho.

I love dogs too with all my heart and always have. We have three. An 8 year old 140 pound male Alaskan Malamute who loves to snuggle, a 2-1/2 year old female GSD who is sweet as all git-out, and a 5 month old male English Shepherd who is real funny and cute as can be. There have only been 2 dogs in my entire life I had issues with and one of them presently lives next door to me. Every time I make the 250 yard walk to my mailbox I now take a pistol with me. Recently when walking with my GSD, on a leash, to get the mail, the dog went into aggressive mode and confronted us in my front yard and I had to grab an old piece of a broken flagpole off my front porch to discourage him. He backed off but wouldn't leave. He's about 75 or 80 pounds so he could have done some damage to either my GSD or me if he got through her. She is only about 65 pounds. We managed to get into the house with no physical altercation but I wasn't sure that was going to be possible at the time. I notified my neighbor what would happen if the dog threatened either me or my dogs again. There wasn't going to be a third time. Those neighbors just let their dogs run wild when they are let out to go to the bathroom and they are all over the neighborhood. He was apologetic and told me to do whatever I needed to do to protect myself. It's his 16 year old daughter's dog and he doesn't like it either. He told me he would take action to see that it doesn't happen again. He said that dog had gotten particularly aggressive in the last year and had bitten him once. They were going to get rid of him but haven't done it yet. I think maybe my neighbor wants me to shoot him so he doesn't have to deal with his daughter after getting rid of the dog. I will do it if it comes to that but I would really hate to. We live in a semi-rural location on the edge of town and there are small farms up and down our road. If his dogs get in with some of the local cattle or goats someone else will shoot them. I had to contain our Malamute when he was younger due to one of his means of entertainment was going to a neighbors pasture and chasing his horses. I put a stop to that after one time. He wouldn't hurt them but the neighbor doesn't know that. The dog is quite large and looks a lot like a wolf so if it were me and I saw that chasing my horses from a distance I would shoot him too. He's just a big goof but he looks intimidating. This picture was when he was only a year old. i.postimg.cc/zX9Dvpc5/Yogi-Boodi-Camping.jpg

A neighbors dog years ago was aggressive like that as well. The owner refused to do anything. The local animal control wouldn't do anything about it,until the dog killed a couple chickens. Florida law comes down hard on dogs that kill livestock. They fined him and made him build a pen to their specs in order to keep them. He moved a month or two later.

Dogs show affection to other dogs in the pack by sniffing and licking each others' faces. Since dogs consider all critters in their home sphere part of their pack, they lick the faces of us human beans as well as the cats, ducks, goats, etc., that we may have around the homestead. It's not a dominance behavior; it's simply affection. Not all critters appreciate it, however.

I've been known to fall asleep on the couch while pretending to watch TV. Almost always I'll wake up to a Golden Retriever face two inches from mine. As soon as I open my eyes she licks my face and runs back upstairs. Who knows why dogs do what they do, but in this case I'm pretty sure she's just making sure her meal ticket is still going to work for breakfast.
I love dogs -- the bigger the better.

Meal ticket Meal There’s a heartbeat between the two. That's hilarious -- and true. She's more than two years old and still swipes my socks and chews them up when she gets a chance. She already thinks I'm delicious -- maybe the licking is just tenderizing me.
