Once upon a time, it would have been shocking: a man staggering down the street, carrying his own severed arm. These days, passersby would most probably take one look and go, "yeah, right, where's the camera," because they saw a prank on Youtube where a guy carried his own severed head under his arm. But in Lewiston, Maine, it was the real deal, and a couple of guys who knew a thing or two about using tourniquets got to him fast, saved his life, and got him to a hospital. The unidentified "young man" apparently severed his own arm at the shoulder while using a band saw. No word yet on whether re-attachment was a possibility. When I read about this, my mind immediately took me to that scene in "Private Ryan," where US troops are being chewed up by well entrenched German machine guns and artillery, as they land on Omaha Beach. Remember the one armed soldier, stumbling along, who bends down and picks up his severed arm, in one shocking moment, brought to us by Steven Spielberg? www.usnews.com/news/us/articles/2022-01-22/divine-intervention-man-carrying-own-severed-arm-is-saved

I also thought of "Private Ryan"/Normandy as soon as I read the thread title.
As far as prospects for reattachment of the arm, having it lopped off with a band saw would probably be preferable to just about any other method of dismemberment: probably a clean cut with no shattering of the bone(s).
The cold weather likely helped keep him from bleeding out.
Pretty grisly event, in any case. Kudos to the guys who found/saved him.

There are still good people in the world--despite what the news might usually have you believe.
Years ago one of my machinist pals got pulled into a large lathe at a shipyard in Baltimore. There was not much left of him by the time they shut it down.

I have questions.
How does one cut off an arm "near the shoulder" on a band saw?
His coworkers who were "witnesses" to the accident let him go for a stroll and "alerted" OSHA rather than call 911?
Probably fake news -- definitely sloppy reporting. A quick search resulted in several different versions of the incident.

Could've been one of those, "hold my beer" situations...

Actually, this news item brought to mind my 7th-grade wood shop teacher. At the beginning of the semester, he was trying to impress upon us the hazard posed by most of the wood-working machinery that would be used by the class. He went a bit overboard and told us (with a dead-straight face) that a student had been cut completely in half by the band saw a couple years prior. We were right at that still-gullible age (12 or 13) where we thought it was probably B.S., but we weren't 100% sure. He was a big guy and we were a bit afraid of him, so we weren't about to call him on it. Telling us that we could lose fingers would've probably have been just as effective, and certainly more believable.
