The film we all know as "Casablanca," began as an unproduced play called, "Everybody Comes to Rick's." The movie went into production with the script unfinished and dodging Hollywood censors, because of dialogue and plot devices "unsuitable" to the moral standards of the day (1942).
Now, the movie is a classic, with its own set of unforgettable lines that have been recycled and parodied.
You never know what's going to be a classic. What if another black and white movie, stumbling out of the starting gate, had lurched into fame because censors were aghast at the booty-shaking dance scenes, but the right people had promoted it as a "must see."
What if "Monster a Go Go" had been 1965's "Casablanca"?

Add a very interesting footnote to this. The song AS TIME GOES BY almost was cut from Casablanca. During studio preview some high ranking executive didn't like the song and wanted it replaced. By that time Ingrid Bergman had begun filming her next project, and her hair was trimmed very short for that role. This made it impossible to re-shoot all her scenes. Soooo, thankfully, one of the best motion picture songs of all time stayed in the picture. #2 according to AFI, second only to Somewhere Over The Rainbow. It's now the signature song for Warner Brothers. BTW it's very easy to play on piano.
