Curious on what your thoughts are on why fender went with a 12AY7 in the preamp instead of the original 12AX7 in thier hand-wired '57 custom champ
Just seems that, if you were buying a champ because you wanted that historic tone wouldn't you want the historic specs
and then being a typical guitarist you would have to change everything to chase the tone dragon and look for something that was never there and lose everything that was

wouldn't you want the historic specs You'd think. The first reissue version of the '57 Deluxe (2007) came with a 12AX7 in V1, rather than the AY in the original 5E3. Apparently they've switched to the AY in the current RI version. Whatever they want...
