I work out six days a week. At home. I gave up going to the gym long before social distancing became an issue. I just didn't like dealing with inconsiderate gym rats and their puddles of sweat.
I mention this as a preface to my consternation over Peloton, its pricey devices and monthly memberships. I can get behind having a distraction while working out: I listen to the radio while punishing myself on my Nordic Track ski machine, for instance. (My NT is about 30 years old and completely manually operated).
What puzzles me is this concept of a streaming exercise "program" that you pay $39 for every month. I don't know about you, but being pushed by a video to go the extra mile, is no more enticing than being "led" by a live person at the gym. I have my exercise goals and achieve them without coaxing or prodding. I'm all for a Youtube video I watch once, that shows me the proper way to do a stretching exercise, but I don't need some clown in a leotard to "lead" me in a stretching workout after that.
I dunno ... maybe I'm the outlier here. What say ye?

I seem to have a problem with exercising on my own; I need someone to help me and push me. Even when I was younger and practicing Martial Arts, I didn't do too much at home (although sometimes I used to practice my forms while working night shift at the jail). After my heart attack in 2015, I had to go to Cardiac Rehab and do monitored exercise. When I completed that, they suggested that I should join a gym to continue. For the next 6 years I went to the gym but didn't do nearly as much working out as I did in Cardiac Rehab.
Recently I discovered that I'm "on the spectrum", which explains why I do better when I'm in a routine going to scheduled supervised classes than when I'm left to my own devices. About 6 months ago I decided to take the Team Training classes at my gym. It's a 30 minute class led by a Personal Trainer, and it's usually just one or two people taking the class. We use the whole gym and do circuit training with various exercises (cardio, core, weights, stretching, etc.). I've been going every morning Monday through Friday (except for illness, bad weather, or scheduled appointments), and it's been WAY more effective than anything I've done on my own.
Maybe it's due to the autism, but I am totally against any kind of video or on-line classes or training. I believe that in order to learn properly, one needs to be under the direct "physical" supervision of a qualified teacher.

^^^ someone to suggest exercises and correct your form can be very valuable. A pep talk from an instructor? Loud music while doing indoor cycling? That would be my version of hell.
I had a trainer put together a few different workouts for me, and I just follow/alternate across those 5x/week. Would probably do much better with actual direct supervision, but I like the flexibility this gives me as well as the lower running costs.

Seriously here...I think it's a function of a primitive part of the brain that is programmed toward tribal mentality. In general, most people feel happier and more secure when surrounded by like-minded people with similar goals. It's why there are so many different religions that espouse the value of gathering in groups, singing songs, or banging drums, or handling snakes, or whatever else happens in church.
I have no desire to work out in a gym because I don't need the motivation and I basically don't like many of the sort of people that go to gyms. I just don't want to deal with any of that.

Another DIY exerciser, here. If I'm not motivated enough to walk to the other end of the house to exercise, I'm sure not going to be motivated enough to drive across town to exercise.
Proud gym membership holder never.
I'll spent my money elsewhere, thank you.
Plus: don't wanna use communal exercise machines all dripping with peegoo...

And sweaty peegoo sounds really gross. C'mere and give me a hug, you great big sweaty man. What do they say? "Don't sweat the petty stuff and don't pet the sweaty stuff." That reminds me of Dom Irrera's riff on guys dancing with guys [WARNING--some grown-up language here]:

You're definitely not the outlier, based only on PTONs stock performance from ipo at $27 to pandemic high $167 Jan '21 to current price $27 lol.
I never got into Peloton or definitely any guided exercise subscriptions. My partner at work is super into cycling and has a peloton for home exercise and seems to enjoy it. I like cycling but it's like number 4-5 on a list of frequent outdoor activities. I have a $15/mo gym membership that I've been meaning to cancel forever but a couple times a year we'll have a totally cold/rainy day where I can't do some sort of outdoor activity and I'll go the gym. I definitely have an inner need to get out of the house and exercise *every day* but most "rainy days" here still have a few hours of clearer weather to walk the dogs down to the lake, so it's very seldom I have to go to the gym for exercise. In the summer if it rains I actually enjoy hiking or even going out on the lake since no one else is out and there are a couple secret waterfall/swimming spots that have rock overhangs to shelter from the rain. Humans are waterproof btw.
I could understand getting into home workouts/etc if there were less outdoor activities around. I don't know why I'd get a peloton when I have a road bike and a mountain bike with tons of local trails, as well as a kayak/paddleboard/wakeboat with a huge lake walking distance away, a lifetime of hiking within 30 min, lots of hunting/fishing nearby, and a house and property that requires constant upkeep as well!

If I had a dollar for every time I vowed to get serious about working out and didn't, I could buy a round for all of us at duffs.
I have a workout room with a bowflex, a nice treadmill and a recumbant exercise bike. I can never stay motivate to use them.
I've only had two times in my life when I was strongly motivated to work out consistently. One was in the 80's when I was sailing competitively. A friend and I wanted to take a stab at nationals and I worked out hard preparing for that summer of racing.
The other was when I had a roommate who worked out and he got tired of me whining that I couldn't get girls. He said you need to do some lifting and he pushed me....hard. After lifting, there were times I couldn't raise my arms high enough to wash my hair. The results were noticeable, but when he moved away I kinda fell off the workouts.
I vowed to start with the new year this year, but I've been working on a project with a tight deadline during most of my free time so it got postponed a month (surprise, surprise). That deadline is this coming friday and I'm planning to wrap it up tonight. (it's a kitchen island I'm building for my daughter). I'll pack it for transport tomorrow and then I plan to take a serious crack at it.
Maybe if you all push me.....

I have no desire to work out in a gym because I don't need the motivation and I basically don't like many of the sort of people that go to gyms I don't know that a gym is for "motivation". To me it's about having access to a bunch of gear without taking up space in the house. I tend to go in very off hours, so the place is mostly empty and I normally don't have to wait anything. Additionally, it's also where I play tennis, and THAT I would really struggle to do at home.

I'm even surprised they have indoor tennis courts at the club I go to! I'm glad tennis is a four seasons sport for me despite being in New England.

i read a few weeks ago that peloton was about through. sales were bad and they were planning a 50% layoff. i haven't kept up but i still see their ADS on tv. i was thinking about looking it over but after reading that i never got around to it.
my best workouts were at the Dojo in kungfu. our instructor was old school and worked our butts off!!! no mercy... we didn't use weights or machines... we used our body weight and when that wasn't enough, he used to have a class mate sit on our backs when we did pushups, hang from our backs when we did pullups, things like that... i won't mention FROG JUMPS!!! ouch!!! my legs cramps just saying the word.
i blew a disk in my lower back and had to stop. i've kinda kept in shape but not like i was. i had started taking tai-chi from the same instructor and he was going to set me up a routine at the gym to strengthen my back when covid started. i never got to do it and he passed suddenly from Cancer. his Dr's thought he was cancer free and he was good for a long time... then suddenly it returned and he passed in a couple of weeks. i've heard all sorts of rumors about what caused his immune system to allow that... no way to really know.
i plan to get back to workouts somehow after Covid... right now i'm just walking a lot and doing farm things.

The OP has it right IMO. I work-out at my local YMCA 3x per week. Day one: upper/lower back, shoulders, biceps, abs Day two: upper/lower chest, lats, triceps, abs Both days include 40 mins of bike with a fairly-high level of resistance for cardio & strength
thus my weeks rotate with two of one set and then the second week, two sets of the other.
I know what my weights were when I was a gym-rat, building up. I know what to do thus I do not need someone barking at me for incentive.
Nowadays I stay under those weights and do more reps. I prefer silence while I work out.
Being in my early 60's I do the above to keep my core more/less in shape as I still load my truck with sound gear and do not want to injure myself.
My wife on the other hand is an "aerobic chickie" and loves getting "yelled at" in fitness classes..... She has dragged me to a couple (actually I lost a bet...that's a story for another time) and I totally hated it.......listening to a "spandex-bimbo" yelling over techno-noise does not shake my tree.
The fitness classes at the Y are chock-full of ladies which may seem as a perk, but it's not my scene.
I'm married so there is enough "yelling" in my life (lol).
