We have a winter (part time) residence in Palm Desert, CA, quite close to Palm Springs. That's the CA desert, so quite dry, all the time. We're not here during the hottest time of the year, when temps can get to 120, and when we leave, we set our home a/c thermostat at 89. I'd like to purchase an acoustic guitar to keep out here, entirely for couch playing. Is it folly? Am I asking for cracks from the dry climate? What I have in mind is a solid wood, all mahogany instrument, maybe a Martin 00-15M or 000-15M, or a Made in China Guild (although I do not care for the glossy finish Guild is using these days). Anyone have experience with these Martin solid wood mahogany guitars? or the Guilds? With the humidity issues, should I just bite the bullet and purchase something built from laminates? It would certainly cost less -- like, maybe a Fender Sonoran Mini (waaaaaay cheaper). Any other suggestions for makes and models to consider? The Martin new is ~~~ $1,350 and I do not really want to go north of that. The Sonoran is, like $200 with gig bag! Thanks. www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/SonorMiniMh--fender-sonoran-mini-acoustic-guitar-all-mahogany

Can't comment on the humidity issue, but I really like the 000-15M. I bought one for each of our two teenage (at that time) kids, 11 years later they both still have them. I wish I'd have bought a 3rd one for me. I find them to have well-balanced tone and they are comfortable to play. Try one if you can.

Check out the Taylor GS Mini. I have the all-mahogany version and it's a sturdy but light little guitar. Very stable, and I have never kept it humidified.

My local Guitar Center has the mahogany GS Mini in stock there (price us up a hundred dollars this year of inflation), and if I weren't so much into nylon strings, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. It is a well-regarded guitar. Take a look at this video -- the first portion of the video is a review of travel guitars, with a review of a Martin model vs. the Taylor mahogany beginning at 5:54 min. (if you speed things up). Of course, unless you're willing to drop the bucks on a nice carbon fiber guitar, I think you'd be taking your chances with any (wood) guitar (hence, humidifiers). I have the 0015 and the 00015S, I would think mahogany would handle humidity problems better than most. Your situation is a pretty severe humidity range, rather lack of. Could you consider a parlor size guitar, that would minimize the footprint for traveling, as well as covering other situations.
Recently I purchased a Cordoba C9 Parlor, it’s a great little classical guitar, in no way is this instrument a compromise. It comes with a beefy soft sided case, you could probably find a padded gig bag that would make it’s foot print even smaller. Or get-a kick ass ukulele. “O)

A point about the GS Mini - smaller bodied instruments seem to be impacted less by humidity fluctuations. Movement in wood is determined as a percentage of the total dimension, so the smaller the dimension, the smaller the movement. Statistically speaking, dreads and jumbos will crack more than concerts and parlors. Nothing is a guarantee, of course. GS Minis seem to get loose bridges a little more often than usual, so I wouldn't want to sell anyone on a guitar with the idea that it is humidity proof, unless it is an all laminate.
I get asked this a lot from seasonal residents here where I am in the desert, but I'm yet to figure out a perfect way.
What some people have done is humidify when they're here, be super-duper diligent in the month or so before they leave (over humidify it, basically), put the humidifier in there along with the D'Addario packs (yes, you can combine a regular humidifier and the packs, it works great), and then put the whole case into a plastic bag, seal up with your preferred method. I don't know exactly how well it works. Even if it isn't perfect, it might be enough to avoid cracks leaving you with just some mild set up issues when you get back. At that point you just make sure you're diligent about humidifying, especially for the first couple weeks to bring it back.
I've heard some people talk about garment bags and the kind you can suck the air out of and have completely sealed. It is an intriguing idea, but I haven't tried it yet myself. If anyone wants to do the legwork for air tight bags that would be guitar case sized, please report back!

I certainly understand the need of having a guitar available. A laminated wood instrument should be able to handle it with out too much problem. I’m thinking the smaller top and back surfaces could help cut down on low humidity stress’

I have a Taylor 512 that is mahogany top, sides and back. The standard that year was Cedar Top but the dealer ordered this guitar with the mahogany top. It is the most stable guitar I own. Took it from Fairbanks AK in the winter (super dry) TO Maui HA (super humidity) one winter. Very little tuning required. I'd recommend mahogany if you have concerns about humidity.
P.S. Sound great too. Not Loud but great.

I still am lusting after a 000-15M. Missed out on one that called out to me years ago. They just seem like a perfect couch and studio guitar.
You might start with an inexpensive acoustic and just case it with some humidipaks and see how it fares.

I just saw this. Watch the video with the guy playing the white mode. www.amazon.com/vdp/d3a535d8bd4d4ab6af240f211d93fde1?ref=dp_vse_rvc_2Review from Acoustic Guitar Magazine There's Lava Me 3 out with additional features and an LED cell phone like controls. Too cool, and still weatherproof. www.amazon.com/dp/B09J8KL2CK/ref=sspa_dk_detail_0?pd_rd_i=B09J8KL2CK&pd_rd_w=LwIut&pf_rd_p=b9951ce4-3bd8-4b04-9123-0fda35d6155e&pd_rd_wg=qnHpy&pf_rd_r=EMRRMV6G6PTFNP19EX4J&pd_rd_r=e6bf4a25-ba5b-4866-89d8-20bca72b443a&s=musical-instruments&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUFMTFk4RkRBNko0M1ImZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTA4OTE3MTgzM0VCODZXVk1aRTVYJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTAxMjE4MjEyTVhQWlhFQThYTTVPJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfZGV0YWlsJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ&th=1

$2,500 in unexpected car repairs yesterday, front suspension, mainly, plus rear shocks, all on our 1998 Explorer, has put a pause to this .

Aw heck Jimmy. It's just money, guitars have value. Get another one, The Lord knows we won't die with too many guitars, but we could die without ever owning the right one.

Maybe next week. ...... or today. Located a second hand 2014 Martin DRS1, solid wood, Made in Mexico Martin dread. We're working out details, but I've got some trade credit at the dealer that can soften the blow. For my purposes, looks like a good solution. www.davesguitar.com/collections/fender-acoustics/products/road-series-drs1-18

Well, you must've made the deal, because that link no longer works (today)! Congrats!
Which of Dave's stores was it at? I was just in LaCrosse last Thursday, and couldn't pass up a very nice (new) lefty Gibson J-45. Considering the "covid" price of guitars these days, I also felt like I got a good price at 10% off of list...

Considering the "covid" price of guitars these days, I also felt like I got a good price at 10% off of list... My Dave's is the Madison outpost, but this did come from La Crosse. All reviews, like, everywhere, of the MIM Martin DRS1 are sensational. Solid wood top, sides, and back (no laminate). The guitar has had since 2014 to settle in. The alternative materials thoughtfully used in construction to make it "roadworthy" are good choices for me when the guitar will be in an extra dry climate and I'm not around to maintain humidification. And it comes with a Martin HSC. This model has now been rebranded as the D10E to fit better into Martin's line-up, and no longer comes with the HSC. All-in-all, made too much sense to pass up.

Buy used, especially when it comes to Martin. Yes, I completed the purchase of my DRS-1 -- the guitar was received in a Martin flat top black tolex hardshell case -- instrument (and case) decent but totally used condition (what I was expecting) -- priced right -- plays and sounds great -- the solid wood has aged beautifully. But I have never owned a dred size guitar before and this thing is mammoth! Closest I ever came was a 000-18 when I was in high school. We're leaving Friday so it will sit until late fall. Will leave humidifier packs in the case, and keep my finders crossed.
