How long does it take for sprout to occur... can it happen in a single season? I have a new a Tele from a local builder and I've noticed the frets are sharp along the edges. I can't recall whether the guitar was always like this (I was very taken with its looks) or whether I'm experiencing fret sprout. I'm leaning toward sprout as the guitar has been (stupidly) living near a forced-air heating vent in the living room through the winter. (Stupid guitar) Is a few months exposure to less-than-ideal conditions enough time to promote shrinkage/spout?
TIA

Oh yeah, a few months is way more time than necessary for that to happen. Sitting near a heating vent ain't helping. Easy enough to fix though and keeping it in a more stable place will alleviate the problem in the future.

Thanks, SirW. The Tele has a new home. I've been talking to the builder about doing some work on the neck (it's pretty chunky). Maybe I can ask him to tidy up the fret ends when he does that.

I got a new neck this summer, made beginning of August, and had some sprout this winter. It was fine until I travelled to Buffalo in December took just a few weeks to come up. Get it fixed now, you'll probably never need to worry about it again.

Anyone ever have issue with fret sprout that has been addressed during low humidity and then have a problem with string fall off on the low and high e's once humidity builds back up?
I have a couple guitars that could use some fret end cleanup, but since "dry" in this part of Texas is temporary thing figure I'll hold off for now.

I think I've seen a pic before of a neck that had swelled considerably in the summer after filing the frets back; it was an extreme case but still nowhere near bad enough to worry about strings slipping off. If a neck blank were so squirrely (or so poorly cared for prior to shaping the neck) as to cause what you're talking about then I think fret sprout would be the least of your worries.

If the person filing the fret ends is over zealous they might round out the fret too much, but that is kinda obvious.
Sometimes as the tang draws back into the fingerboard the edge will be less smooth as there is now a slight dent, but it isn't nearly as bad as when it was sticking out.

Need to do a quick fix for fret sprout?
Place the guitar on a stand in the bathroom when you take a hot shower. It will reduce the 'teeth' enough to make playing comfy again. Keep the guitar in its case with a humidifier in there with it on the way to the gig.

I don't think my fretted instruments have experienced as much fret sprout as they did this year. I have limited space for instruments in hard cases. Only my Robert Schmidt signature Fender plectrum banjo is allowed that honor. Only a little light touch up with a fine file was needed to get everything comfortable

Hey Auf , I’ve though about changing my handle a few times. Especially when I’m watching Viking themed TV. Very uncomfortable fret sprout on your average guitar is typically only a few thousandths of an inch of fret. A skilled tech who does this right doesn’t actually remove much metal. Additionally, seasonal changes do not change the fret but rather the wood.
