Is there a simple way to transfer all the info without spending 100 bucks on a special program, I have an external HD. Could it be as easy as copy/paste to the external? and then the same to the new pute? Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

That's what I would do, cut and paste.

unless you wanted to move applications...that requires a reinstall or an image of the old and migrate to the new data only is a simple copy/paste

Thanks for the replies, I just ordered a new laptop and a transfer cable that has built in software, hopefully it will be as easy as the reviewers claim. But nothing is as easy as it seems to a luddite like me.

If you used a cloud service (Apple/Google/Dropbox/Microsoft), you don't even need a cable. Put everything in the cloud drive and sync the cloud drive to the new PC. Problem solved.

Oops, I forgot that I posted this. Well it appears I was on the cloud and didn't even know it, Had to redo some passwords and re-down load some games and I was up and running.
Now I am scared. and dissabled my cloud.
