So the old man blues band, that I play bass in, supported one of the hot local hard rock, early AC/DC style, bands at a motorcycle show the other day.
When we got there the headliners had already set up the stage.
Their bass player said I could use his Ampeg amp thru the 8 X 10 cab.
My only regret is I didn't turn it up even louder than I did ! ☺

Reading the thread title made my back hurt, but I'm sure that playing one without having to move it was a lot of fun.

I like lightweight modern cabs and Class D heads . I put it in the car ,set it up , and drive it home . And used to run a fridge back in the day , there’s nothing quite like standing in front of an 8x10 rig at volume . I get it …

The paid rehearsal space we use has one of those. It is glorious, but I'm also going against a Marshall with a 4x12 cab and a Mesa with a 4x12 cab. Volume wars happen pretty quickly in that room!

In the spirit of the Fender Precision being the Stradivarius of the electric bass, the SVT is the holy grail of bass amplifiers!

Yeah, I still like SVT's. Unless I am carrying it.

oh man, I know the feeling. Substituted on a gig, they provided an Acoustic 371/301 (you know, the 18" speaker behemoth). Like playing a tunable subway train.

This rig is my favorite bass tone. It’s doubtful I’ll ever get to play through one. And that’s ok.

I have heard those 18" are focused more out in the parking lot when at a smaller club. Is that true? Yes. I played a gig many years ago with the Braille Blues Daddy, Bryan Lee, where we used the gear from the opening act and the bass player had that 18” folded horn Acoustic rig. To me on stage it sounded thin and really distorted but I guess it was great in the parking lot. What I used for bass in those days was a Showman amp with two double 15” JBL bottoms (sounded great on stage).

Perennial problem for a bass player, unless you're at the back wall, playing through a wireless, you REALLY don't experience what the crowd is experiencing.
And considering a 40 Hz tone has around a 28 foot wave, chances are good you're setting off car alarms before inducing internal hemorrhaging to the delight of the fans inside. The 18's just give you more opportunity to go 20 Hz /56 foot.
I THINK I remember someone making a portable subwoofer that you strap to your back. I guess it didn't catch on, now, did it?

I haven’t owned a lot of amps. The first I got for my16th birthday it was the Fender Bassman combo, circa 1969, I think it was 50 watts, it was stolen. I had a Bassman 4X10, it was 50 watts too. The first amp I purchased new was the first SWR studio 220 and the 4X10 Goliath cab. I still have and use this amp. It’s got great tone. I purchased the Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0 amp when it came out, my friend let me have it at his cost. I used it with the Goliath eventually adding a SWR golite jr. two by 10 cab. Just before I moved up to the farm I added a Hartke 18”
For a short time, back in the 80s, I had an Acoustic Amp that was a beast. I traded it in for the SWR. My home amp is a Fender Rumble 40, permanently set up behind an arm chair in the living room. I turn it on and off with my phone. A grab and go Gallien-Krueger MB150E as well as a Roland Micro Cube RX Bass Combo Amp, not impressed, and a couple of Pignose amps, one vintage (leather covered) made in Chicago and one in tweed.
Humm guess I had more than I figured. Oh and a Silver Face Fender Vibro Champ for when I feel like pulling out theTele.
I’d like to mention that the Fender Rumble 40 works really well with an acoustic guitar.

I played in a metal band back in my early 20s and the bass player used two of those, one on each side of the stage.
