I have way too many sample libraries I have had since the 2010's or earlier. Almost all of them were designed to run on a 32 bit OS format. Some of them I have been able to make work on 64 bit Windows 8.1. Some of them will not work no matter what. Anything that uses the Native Instruments Kontakt sampler format I have been able to get working but have to do work-arounds in order to use them. Some of them have stand-alone sample player engines that I have been able to make work by running them in Windows Compatibility Mode as Windows XP.
I have one library that is just too cool not to use so I have been experimenting with different installation formats to see if I could get it to run. It is an orchestral choir sample library that has the ability to program actual words into it and have the choir sing them as they are being played using MIDI files. It is just incredible what it can do. I had not been able to run it on my Windows 8.1 machine. I decided that I was going to exhaust every effort to make it work before I gave up completely. It comes on 9 DVD's and all the files are data compressed so they must be installed using the Windows Installer that comes with the software. A huge piece of software. Over 40GB of compressed files.
Each time I attempted an installation it took about 2 hours to install it, test it, and then uninstall it in order to try again with different compatibility settings. Some of the installations had to be uninstalled manually by deleting all the files and then going into the Windows Registry and deleting all the keys in there. Very time consuming. The different modes I tried were Windows XP Service Pack 2, XP Service Pack 3, Vista Service Pack 2, and Vista Service Pack 3. Many of the modes I tried 2 or 3 times with different configurations to see if I could get it working. I spent days tinkering with it.
I had success today installing it in Windows 7 Compatibility Mode. Finally! It was an expensive library when I bought it and I really didn't want to shelve it. I have it installed on my old 32 bit Windows XP machine and it works just fine. I can run a MIDI cable to that computer and play it from there but programming words and such into the library is very cumbersome when splitting it up between two separate computers. Then there's a bit too much latency to deal with and that means having to run time code offsets and such to make everything line up on playback with the DAW. It's much easier and less time consuming to have it all running from one machine.
I am happy to say that I figured it out. After I did I made a text file documenting how I did it and saved it so I won't ever have to go through that process again.
It's pretty funny to hear a huge orchestral choir singing rather adolescent phrases that couldn't be repeated here. Definitely some things that would never be heard in church.
