I picked up my new Ortega Requinto QR39 (solid cedar top) yesterday afternoon. This specific model had been back ordered, and is aromatically fresh from the factory. I sat and noodled for a few hours; it’s really the guitar I was hoping it would be. About 8 pm I start getting a headache and my throat is starting to get sore; had to take some pain killers. I went to bed a couple of hours later, and my wife and I decided we’d do COVID testing in the morning with our test kits. This morning, lying in bed, I realize I’m feeling pretty good; the meds have worn off, and the headache and sore throat are gone. It occurs to me that the new guitar odor and whatever else is there has caused my discomfort.
I’ve never been allergic to anything, but the past couple of years I’ve become very sensitive to my neighbor’s small grove of cedar trees; near-severe allergic symptoms; had to wear a mask while working on my fence. Of course there’s no pollen shedding from this new guitar, but something related to the noticeable odor of that solid cedar top must have caused my symptoms. I’m going to set it aside for a couple of weeks to air out. Anyway, I’ve had to order a new saddle; as usual, these new short-scale acoustics (my third one) have strings about a quarter inch high and always need some work.
