Had to take my acoustic in for a set up. Same place that had the banjo for 4 months. They tell me for an extra $45 I get it back in 7 days. Yeah ok. Premier shop. Over 200 guitars waiting. Gotta do it. Truss rod and nut out of sorts. Kinda miss it already and I am not even home yet.

I hear ya, but I hate it when businesses offer that; other people will have to wait longer for their instruments and what are they telling them? "We'll have it done in two weeks, unless other people pay me more money." Experience tells me that most are not being that honest. Some of the big amusement parks do that too; pay a premium and skip to the head of the line.

I don't have that at my shop, though people offer to pay extra for rush service all the time. I generally give it on a case-by-case basis (if everyone cuts the line, no one cuts the line), people who play regularly, students who only have one guitar, professionals, etc., but I never charge for it. Honestly, the ones who have near melt-downs over turn around times are usually not the ones who need it quickly. The funniest is when someone pulls an instrument out of a closet after collecting dust for 20 years, and they don't want to wait a few weeks.
I'm incredibly swamped right now and have people calling me all the time. Some people understand that if you're good at this stuff you're going to be popular and very busy. Others expect it to be like a Jiffy-Lube. How does the saying go, of "good", "cheap" and "fast", you can only have two of those, but not all three?

I agree that a shop charging a premium for a rush job is being disingenuous to their customers. I've always had a 'first in--first out' policy. Nobody is more important than anyone else.

I agree that a shop charging a premium for a rush job is being disingenuous to their customers. I've always had a 'first in--first out' policy. Nobody is more important than anyone else. I was having this conversation with a co-worker yesterday, actually.
Nothing dishonest with having a lot of work, and it just taking its place in line.
Some people also don't understand backlog. If I tell them it'll take four weeks they'll ask "it takes four weeks to reglue a bridge?!" and I have to point to the mountain of guitars behind me and explain what a backlog is. Other people want to wait until I'm "ready to work on it" and then bring it in, but that adds a whole bunch of administrative work on the phone and scheduling pick ups and drop offs and I lose a whole bunch of time dealing with that. I can't be blowing half my day on that.
I have exactly ONE customer that I consistently do rush work for. He has a very worn Taylor that I've refretted at least half a dozen times. He plays 6-7 nights a week and genuinely makes a living with his guitar. I really wish he'd just buy a back up at this point, but that's his decision to make, not mine. Most other people are just squeaky wheels.

Well picked ig up today. I was told 7 day turnaround for extra $45. Dropped it off Tuesday and they did not charge the rush charge. I think they felt bad about 4 months on the banjo. Guy did a real good job...AND I got to bs with the owner while I was checking it out. Very good experience. Yay!!

Woo hoo!
I forgot to mention that my shop has a surcharge of 20% for anyone who refers to their guitar in the feminine. Watch out for "she's a sweetie" or "take good care of her". It'll cost you.
Also, there is a minimum bench fee if you'd like us to "work our magic".

Crafter. Hofner Co I think. Korean build. We bought it for our daughter about 15 years ago. She lost interest after a year. I kept it as it us pretty nice. Every couple of years it needed a set up, other than that I just played it. Strings through the saddle not the top. Been very dependable. When I picked it up action was s little high but it played it tune through the 14 fret. They said they guarantee their work. We shall see.

Well, it ain't dry! Unless it was set up at a point when it was incredibly over humidified and has since normalized.
Here in dry climates we're always conscious to set things up at proper humidity. I'm not sure what high humidity shops do. Maybe there isn't much they CAN do since dehumidifying is so expensive and impractical.

This guitar has been pretty much trouble free since 2006. Every couple years get it set up to correct the little bit of a bow it would get. It has always been in tune up the neck. I regularly play up to 10th or 12th. Sometimes 14th. I will take it in tomorrow.
