Recently acquired a SM-58 to sing through an acoustic amp at home. Looking at Sweetwater, the reviews on the $40-$80 stands seem hit and miss. Also assume I need a separate mike holder?

Well do you want a straight stand or a boom stand? If you want a boom it is good to have a telescoping boom. If you want a straight stand a gooseneck can he helpful.. Do you want a tripod base or a weighted base. A tripod won't mash fingers like a weighted base but has a bigger foot print.

I’m thinking telescoping, base doesn’t matter.

I’m happy with my Amazon Basic stands at $27.71 each. They have a boom and perform well.

For an SM58 the stand type doesn't matter much although I would recommend a boom stand with a tripod base. A $30 stand is sufficient. A boom stand is more versatile than a straight stand and can be configured in a number of different ways where a straight stand cannot. If I were you I would stay away from a gooseneck. Goosenecks only work well when they are hanging down from an overhead boom stand, like a drummer would use. Any other time they fight you and don't want to stay where they are put.
Your SM58 should have come with a plastic microphone clip that will screw onto a mic stand for holding the mic.

I'm using whatever the basic cheapo Sweetwater multi-pack is these days (would have to look) except on the big, heavy ribbon.
That's got a very short standard base stand as I don't want it to be knocked over and it sits high enough to go where I want on the amp.

Thanks for the suggestions- rechecked the box and I indeed have the mike holder.

Pretty much everything comes with a stand adaptor.
Whether you like it or not is another story (usually an issue on some big bodied condensers etc that benefit from a shockmount)

I have found a 6 inch gooseneck on a straight stand with a round base works very well. Minimal footprint and it keeps me from banging the neck into the stand. Good pipe in a pinch (back in the day). If I have room for a tripod great, a boom great. Situations change.

Get one w a heavy base or wide tripod. Our organist has a chincy one and when the boom is fully extended it tips over w an SM58 Can't recommend K&M stands enough, a little more $ but buy one and you'll never have to replace it.

Mine are all Pyle solid heavy base stands.
They are cheap. I got mine on eBay.
The small round base doesn’t take up much floor space … that was important to me in my music room.

You also want to think about the type of grip. For a few extra dollars you can go with a clutch grip. I prefer it to the twist type.

For home use I’d get an On-Stage telescoping boom stand. Through Sweetwater, they’re anout $40. Pretty sure the mic comes with a clip.

For home use I’d get an On-Stage telescoping boom stand. Through Sweetwater, they’re anout $40. Pretty sure the mic comes with a clip. They don't. It's standard end, attach what you have that comes with the mic in question. I got a 4 pack of the "Euro booms" a few months back for cheap. They're decent stands, and I got bonus free one because one came without a nut on the adjustment rod - Sweetwater just sent me another entire stand and told me to keep the functional one that was missing a nut. For .50 at the hardware store, I got another stand gratis.

After going through countless mic stands that were problematic (tipped over easily, sagged, lousy durability, etc), I've settled on using a weighted round base stand with a (K&M) boom arm. The smaller footprint is invaluable at gigs, and never tips over or sways. Unless you need to attach an iPad or music chart shelf directly to your mic stand, IMO this is the final ideal answer.

I know the OP's question was already answered, but I'll just add on anyways: I like the Atlas weighted round stand (MS-12) and the Atlas PB11 weighted mini boom. The MS-12 has the lower profile base compared to the MS-10. And the PB-11 actually extends out to 24 inches, but I never need it to go that far.
