So, I've got around 18 piles of brush I've raked up over my 1 acre property.
I'm almost embarassed to ask this, about my John Deere 22 HP / 44 cu in Lawn tractor pulling around a lawn cart.
Each brush pile will take a little over 10 minutes to consolidate and load into the cart- am I better off ramping down the throttle and let the tractor run, or shutting it down and restarting each time? I'm guessing the stress of stop/restart would not be the solution..

Either way won't matter that much to the engine. If your battery is getting weak, 18 starts without much runtime in between might stress it out to the point of failure. You'll have to weigh that possibility against 180 minutes of wasted gas at idle.

On a side note this sounds like one of those Mensa/SAT test questions. A train leaves station A at 10 am.....

OFBP Walt attempts to start his tractor for the 18th time, with a lawn cart FULL of brush.

How long does it take him to start up the tractor with his porta-battery

If it were me I'd let it idle.

Idle group, also. All that repetitive starting = more stress (‘wearing out”) on the starter as well as battery drain concerns.
But if your tractor has a “cord pull” option, you could go for that. ;-)

3 hours of idling? Save the fuel and kill it. It’s not going to hurt anything. If you keep your battery on a tender, as you should anyway, no issues there either.

Even better just bulldoze all the debris into one larger pile, add gas and an ignition source, and done.

Shut it off. It is an air cooled engine. 2 or 3 min fine.

Ours has a seat interlock that I never bothered to defeat. Battery is strong, I let it shut off.

How far are you moving each load? If short run it might not have enough time to charge battery. If Long run then I say you can cut it off
