...Or, so it seems. Like you, from time to time, I like to check the prices for guitars and I usually just go to Sweetwater for that. Today, it was no different. So, as I was looking over the prices, it occurred to me to make a comparison on two Gibson Les Paul's. One a standard. the other, a 1958 custom shop. Being as I just bought a standard a few months back, I used the same model in this comparison against the custom shop. Both, with mostly the same features to the point that they were almost a mirror image of each other. Here's the link that shows the comparison.
When I was looking at them, I couldn't get past how similar they were even though they were separated in price by more then 2 grand. Same body shape. Same woods used. Same color...wait! The custom shop LP is Ice Tea Burst were mine is just Ice Tea. The standard is merely a '50's model were as the custom shop is a year specific, 1958 and...it is a VOS!! Uh? Does that stand for Virtual Old Stock? Very Old Stock? Not sure. So, it got me to thinking that maybe the real difference between these two is all in how their descriptions are worded! Yeah, that must be it! The standard buckers are '57 classics. The custom shop LP has Alnico III buckers (are these like gold?). I think there is a little 'Murphy' behind the custom shop but it doesn't really say. Just a small reference to that 'style' without calling it a 'Murphy'. Anyway, if you are so inclined, check out the link and see what you think. Are these two all that different in their construction? Does the custom shop have a $5000 dollar sound and tone? Is one guaranteed to be the perfect LP compared to the other one maybe being a crap shoot? Or...is it just the words? 🤔
