I had a fellow recording-geek friend of mine come to visit for a couple weeks so we went and toured Blackbird Studios in Nashville for something to do. Blackbird is known to be one of the best equipped studios in the world. Right up the with Capitol Studios in L.A. and Abbey Road in the UK. What a phenomenal facility. It covers an entire city block. It has different studios that are all equipped with the best gear in the world. They have a couple echo chambers, one of which has a ceiling that will lower from about 20 feet to 8 feet to change the decay characteristics.
Their tracking rooms and control rooms have the best acoustics you have ever heard. It was a real pleasure to listen to music in such a perfect acoustically tuned environment. Their Dolby ATMOS rooms were mind blowing.
They tout having over 1400 vintage microphones, any are available for rental and the rates are surprisingly reasonable. They also have a gear rental department that has just about any piece of high-end outboard gear you could ever imagine in multiples. They also have a guitar amp collection that puts Rick Beato's to shame. There is also a sizable guitar collection available to their clients. Anything you need in the way of instruments they have. Their drum storage room is probably 800 square feet and has shelves 4 tiers tall packed full of drums of all kinds. I think they said they have over 100 snare drums alone.
It's not very likely that I will ever be able to see Abbey Road or Capitol Studios so I thought it would be very cool to see how the big boys do it in a world-class facility. I was not wrong.
Here are some photos.
