My notebook computer wouldn't boot last week. First thought was the battery was dead. Wouldn't take a charge from my power adapter. Went to Apple Store to replace adapter -- but no inventory of the unit I need -- they sold me an underpowered adapter (30 watt vs 95 watt -- all they had in stock) that could so the job.
After two days, computer was charged, and booted, but got notice that battery was "severely compromised."
Went into Apple Store today, tech at the Genius Bar ran diagnostics and confirmed the battery needed to be replaced.
Briefly considered the possibility of purchasing a new computer to replace my 2017 MacBook Pro -- five years is a lifetime for a well traveled system -- but when comparing configurations and costs of what they had in walk-out-the-door-in-stock -- $260 for the battery service vs $5k+ for a new system, I made the no-brainer choice.
Small detail -- we're in the UK -- that system quote took the breath out of me.
To do the service, they have to ship the system to "the depot." Where's "the depot?" Answer: in the Czech Republic. OK. They say a week to ten days turnaround.
Hope "the depot" has the part I need.

Just so you know, the "depot" in the Czech Republic, is staffed by Oompa-Loompas. What Apple failed to explain is that at the "depot", a week to ten day turnaround is how long it takes a team of Oompa-Loompas to turn around and see that something new has landed on their work bench.

Not to start the Apple v. not Apple debate, the sealed system where they must open repair and replace, is less than ideal. Wife's work laptop needed battery, Best Best buy had 3 or 4 different replacements in stock.
I would be happy that they can still replace the battery, as you mentioned 5 years in computers is like a millennium in other tech.

If we were back home in Madison, I've got a highly experienced, well trusted Apple authorized repair bench that I could ask to do the job. Out here, it would be a crapshoot to find someone. Going with Apple seemed to be the safest alternative, outside of dropping big buck$$ on a new system. Fortunately for me, when I travel, I always take a spare system (redundancy is your friend). It'll fill in until the MacBook comes back. That's what I'm posting with now -- a 2020 MacBook Air.

My computer was diagnosed at the Apple store in Bristol UK on Sunday, shipped to the Czech "depot" Monday, got confirmation from Apple that it was received there today, Tuesday. So now we'll see how long the battery replacement takes before it is returned to me. (Hope it's not long.)

UPDATE: Apple says my repair was completed same day as it was received, and the computer shipped out today. Should receive it back in two days.
Wow.

With all the worldwide supply chain issues, I was relieved they even had the battery to install into my unit!
