A few years back my doc ordered an xray of my neck due to complaints of finger tip tingling/numbness that didn't necessarily fit the carpal tunnel profile. The xray suggested a "2mm anterolisthesis of C3 and C4, and mild anterior wedging of C6". My doc asked me if I ever had a neck injury or whiplash, to which I answered "no". Then as a followup I asked her "could you be talking about a really old injury, like when I was 5?". She pondered for a moment and said, "I suppose so".
When I was about 5 or 6, I climbed a tree in my backyard. I was getting buzzed by a bee and tried jumping to the ground, but my foot got stuck in the crook of the branch and trunk. I fell forward, cracked my forehead on the base of the tree, then my foot let loose andI fell the rest of the way head first. The weight of my body pushed my chin into my chest and the pain was excruciating. I told no one. I could barely turn my head left or right for what felt like months. To this day when I turn my head I hear a crackling sound in my head.
My doc ordered an MRI and to my surprise that came back normal with no supporting evidence of the xray findings. I've often wondered if perhaps a standing xray vs a laying MRI may produce different results.
"He fell on his head as a child" could explain a lot. 😄

I keep waiting for my dad's prediction to come through. I broke my tib/fib in '91, and later on he told me "When you get older, that's going to give you problems!"
So far, so good....I keep hoping he was wrong.

I hurt myself sneezing a few days ago, does that count?
But seriously, nothing as old as Auf's. I broke a bone in my hand about 30 years ago, it still hurts, off and on.

When I was fourteen an idiot schoolmate tried to jump over me as I was sitting with my back turned. It rammed my chin into my chest. The pain was excruciating for a few days. Like you, I said nothing and toughed it out. A few years ago I went in for surgery and the anesthesiologist checked my neck motion and asked me if I’d ever had a neck injury. I get a dull ache once in a while if I’ve driven all day and, oh yes, cracking when I turn my head. I just keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best.

It rammed my chin into my chest. The pain was excruciating for a few days. Like you, I said nothing and toughed it out. Have done this at least twice over the years while surfing: bailed out over shallower-than-I-realized sand bars causing the top of my head to hit the bottom.
My L5 problems also started with a surfing accident that happened when I was 15 years old.

I’m quite certain I had a number of undiagnosed concussions as a kid. Contact sports and a penchant for getting into fights.

I'm no doctor, but I know my situation changes all the time.
I have to believe an X-ray or MRI can only see what is there in the moment ... better or worse.
I'm sure some damage is obvious, but if things are aligned better than usual when the image is taken, that's what it sees.

I’ve get old injury “reminders” as I’ve grow older. And even further in the past, my right ankle never likes the onset of winter. I sprained that ankle when I was 16.

My old injuries were quite pronounced and documented and yes they nag me pretty much constantly.

Freshman year football- I was chop blocked, knee bent sideways, bye-bye ACL. After a few weeks, tried playing again, but had a recurring trick knee that went out during random activity, or sometimes just stepping wrong.
I spent a year weight training my legs, ended co-captain of my HS soccer team, no problems. For 50 years, I've always wondered if that knee will decide to turn another trick, but no problems.
Now with knee replacement, I still don't have an ACL, but feel even more confident.

i have soooo many... i'm an accident waiting to happen. i won't bore you with all but the main ones are:
i was in a fight and took a blow across my left hip from a baseball bat. it's been problematic, never had it checked. flexibility in martial arts with that leg was limited and the limitation is getting worse as i age. painfully stiff in the mornings now. feels like there's a pinecone in the socket at times.
i blocked a low kick with a back fist, broke the right hand ring finger knuckle off. Dr said nothing to do but immobilize it and let it grow back. it is what it is. painfully stiff at times but loosens up. somewhat of an issue playing any instrument that requires finger motion.
i ruptured a disk in my neck. it finally quit hurting but i'm left with a mostly numb left hand, outer rear upper arm and some of my shoulder. its strange... my hand feels numb but then, anything sharp, hot, cold, or sharp creates MORE pain than before. how's that work? at first, i couldn't feel the guitar strings, but now i can feel them, but pressing is uncomfortable/irritating on my fingers. the hand is functional but playing is not fun. like having a gravel in your shoe.
i took a fall in a kung fu match and broke both bones in my left arm just above the wrist. the only thing holding the hand on was the flesh, tendons, muscles, etc... it was pinned several times and strapped to a plaster plank for 6 weeks. the guy didn't do a very good job setting it i don't think, but he says considering the way it was splintered, he did the best he could do. it's kinda crooked. makes getting the wrist in the correct position to play difficult. 15 years later, i can still hear squeaking in the arm when i rotate my wrist...
i got more... i'm an accident waiting to happen ;-)

Of course a couple more potential contributors come to mind. When the Detroit Tigers won the 68 pennant my buddy and I climbed one of those billboard signs. Cars were honking, people cheering. Somewhere I acquired one of those little "bat day" bats and was furiously beating the billboard, turned and stepped off the platform. I landed on my feet, busted my lip on my kneecap. I repeated a similar feat of stupidity maybe 6 years later, but this time I walked off a roof at night time trying to retrieve a six pack my buddy and I stashed in the gutter. That time I landed heels first, knees locked.
Heights and I don't have a good history.

When I was about 5 or 6, I climbed a tree in my backyard. not trying to make light of what happened to you, but if it makes you feel any better, kids don't climb trees anymore..

About 15 - 20 years ago I injured my left knee playing football. Basically, another player stood on my left foot, pinning it to the ground, while another hit my knee from the side, and as it couldn’t move it, I got some fairly bad ligament damage. I seriously thought my playing days were over, but after a couple of months I was ok and started playing again. Unfortunately about 5 years ago I started getting chronic pain in the same knee; I’m ok walking in a straight line on flat surfaces, but can’t run, or change direction. Currently waiting for medical treatment, but I definitely think it’s related to my previous injury.

Cracked the back of my head pretty hard slipping on some ice in Alaska...got sick for a couple months as a kid and completely blanked out that Summer until reminded of it 30 years later...got some bad internal damage and a right hand fractured in 3 places stupidly playing "flag football" in college with real football players that purposely or accidentally "forgot" it was a no-contact game...this still hurts me...but the real damage I suffered was too my right foot.
The only thing interesting about that is that it all started with a young Bill Lambier(eventual Celtics pro).
Bill's family had a house across the street from the high school when he was about 13 or 14 and he'd shoot basketball at the high school about the same time I was done with tennis practice and walking home. Even that young he was 6 foot 2 or 3 but he was skinny and still growing into his future pro body. But he could shoot. And being several years older I was a fast, hyper coordinated endurance machine with extra time on my hands. So, we'd play one on one or two on two, and this went on for a couple months. He'd block half of my jump shots but he couldn't stop my layups and hooks very well...just too slow. I probably frustrated the hell out of him running past him all the time. And I had a 36 inch vertical leap so he couldn't shoot over me that easily either...and if he put the ball on the ground, I'd steal it. So he struggled, but he always wanted to play. Then one day it was 3 on 3 and I made the stupid decision to think I could rebound with that many bodies and a giant 14 year old. Nope. Shoulda stayed outside. Bill came down on my foot and that was the end of my basketball interest playing big bodies, and sliced 2 weeks off my tennis practice. Unfortunately, it was that first injury that started a long history of injuries to that foot that really bothers me today. For I can't play sports anymore, and can't walk without pain everyday. But I can still drive and walk if I ignore the pain. I moved away from that high school and 10 years or so later, imagine my surprise to realize that the skinny kid that I had played with on those lonely outside courts in high school, had blossomed into a fearsome Celtics basketball pro ! Who knew ?

The only thing interesting about that is that it all started with a young Bill Lambier(eventual Celtics pro). Do you mean Detroit Piston's bad boy Bill Laimbeer? When did he play for the Celtics? I once went to a Detroit Lions game at the Silverdome, had great seats around the 50. Who comes strolling in with his long shanks and sits right in front of me? Bill Laimbeer.

I broke my left arm when I was in the 6th grade. Both bones near the wrist. A few weeks after it was set, the doctor decided it needed to be reset, so they put me under anesthesia to go in there and reset the bones. When I awoke, I learned that the bones had healed too completely for them to do anything with them.
I would love to see an X-ray of both arms just to compare and contrast.
I hadn't really wondered about this old injury until I saw this thread.

HaHa ! Big bad Bill Laimbeer = Detroit. Yep. Shows you how far out I dropped at the time. I was surprised as heck to find out !
Yeah, whenever I need a chuckle I just imagine my high school body trying to drive on that Bad Boy in his prime.
***bounce bounce SQUISH....sound of ball rolling away***
