It's one of those events for which there is no good explanation for Russia. It's like, "Are you stupid, or just dumb?"
It's either:
a) we got hit by enemy fire and were sunk; or
b) there was an explosion that set off the munitions on board and we sunk.
Either way, driven by incompetence.
I can't imagine the Kremlin is too pleased with that.
It was, apparently, the flagship of the Black Sea fleet. Does that mean the Admiral was on board? Unless he went down with his ship, bet he's got some 'splainin' to do.

Well it is the 2nd ship they lost there. And they did move the rest away...

Funniest comment I saw in regard to the sinking:
"It didn't sink: it's gone on an under-water 'special operation'".
Seems like defensive posture in a war zone ("how could we have known they'd attack the flagship of our fleet?") and subsequent damage control measures may have left something to be desired.

Maybe they should have a flagship submarine.

Maybe they should have a flagship submarine. Well… as it happens…

I'm having trouble believing any of the reporting we are getting related to this cluster fooch -- neither side has any reason to report the truth, and we certainly can't count on our own media to do any actual journalism.

I trust Twitter.
My concern is that this might be a “Broken Arrow” incident. What we know… the ship is at the bottom of the Black Sea. What was on her?

Posting to say that this thread might not fare well.

Russia confirms the ship sank. Start from there. So we are to believe reports from Russia? Why would they confirm something that makes them look weak or incompetent, or gives Ukraine a perceived victory? Maybe it's true -- but given the fact that the U.S. media has picked a side, i.e., Ukraine, it seems unlikely that anything we are hearing or reading can be accepted on face value.

Russia has confirmed that the ship sank due to a fire and munitions exploding.
No cause was mentioned.

I don’t see this thread going well. I’ve locked it. The head giraffe can weigh in. 🙂

Keep it locked. Foreign politics is still politics.
