A few months ago I tried and experiment. I sold everything…
I had not been playing much and thought it was just done in favor of other things, and the market was good.
Then, at the very end a Supro Delta King 10 amp I sold to a local guy wouldn’t work for him (probably tube issues). I took it back, as he’d also bought my Quilter Aviator Cub.
As it sat there, a lone amp without a guitar in the house, I wondered if it was a sign. Time passed and I missed noodling around.
Went as cheap as I could with quality that works and bought a Gretsch Electromatic Jet. And a 5W Yamaha battery operated amp.
Been playing every day for 2 weeks now…

Nice choices!
Sometimes a purge is what is needed. I did it @12 years about.
I’m back bay-bee. 🙂

I'm back with a vengeance and vacillate between selling all but a couple and building more. If I was serious I could strip down to 1 Tele, 1 Strat, my P90 LP, my Gretsch 5420 and my H-H Strat build with a Gibson-y neck profile. I could part with my Epi ES-335 Pro without too much heartache. Same with the Dano 12 string but it could come in handy in future recording projects. It'd be Sofie's Choice with the Strats, plus one is strung pseudo baritone, so...The Thinline has sentimental value because it was my 2nd build I gigged a lot with it back in the day. Ahhh, I should dump 'em all.
Or....build an Esquire, I got a spare neck.

Every so often I find something that inspires me to play without wanting to fiddle with the gear. For a lot of people that is an acoustic. In the days when I was trying to learn classical, that was a big appeal to me.
You don't play for 20 minutes and wonder "what would happen if..." and suddenly you're fiddling with stuff or checking online for this or that pedal or pickup set. You just play.

My problem is that usually, when I've selected something to unload, I want to give it a "goodbye play". Too often, that results in, "gee, that's kinda nice: now I remember why I bought it in the first place. Mebbe I'll hang onto it just awhile longer..."
As a result, too many things I should've already sold off continue to clutter up my music room.
I think that another thing that keeps me from selling stuff is that I couldn't afford "really nice stuff" when I was young, so some of the stuff I've accumulated is items I lusted after for a long time and was only able to afford later in life. There seems to be some disconnect between the residual power of that long-term lust and how much (or not) I actually ended up liking a given item as much as I thought I would once I finally got it. If that makes any sense...
The other problem is that, during the early 1980s, I did sell a couple of really unique pieces which I very much regret not hanging onto. At the time, I was working full time and living alone in a not so nice neighborhood next to some gang-bangers, so I worried that these items might get ripped off while I was at work.
In short, I'm a neurotic gear slut...

More often than not, fewer gear choices are far more liberating than limiting.
It frees one's mind and makes it much easier to think about the music and not the gear.

When I quit gigging in 2011, I was so burnt out I couldn’t care less if I ever saw another guitar. I sold all of my “bootique” guitars and amps. I kept my favorite guitar and bought a little solid state amp in case I got the urge to noodle around. It hasn’t happened yet. Instead, I got serious about drumming. I have no desire to play out anymore but if I did, it would be as a drummer.
