I’ll be making the annual spring pilgrimage from Texas to Idaho in a few weeks. I’ll have a few trusted firearms, guitars, and amps on board. My 2017 F150 has the onboard alarms but ever since I read that a vacationing family had their truck stolen at the Hilton I use in Salt Lake City I’m always nervous. I’ve been looking at satellite tracking options which are many. I need something simple that I can conceal in the truck while I try to sleep. I think I prefer a larger up front charge with no subscription but I’m not sure. What I am sure of is that it needs to be idiot proof and easy to use. Do any of you have some advice or suggestions?

Where in Idaho? I don't know anything about tracking devices. Sorry.

Disable the engine / pull a simple part or wire (but not from the battery).

Yea, pulling the fuel pump fuse will work unless they steal it with a roll back. I still say Lojack.

Am I to understand the intention is to leave the gear in the car overnight? It does sound like it, but that does not strike me as a good idea. Even if you can track the car, there's no reason to think you'd find the gear as well. They might also just take gear, and then what happens? My policy is that if I can't move it to my hotel room with me, it's not coming.

As a bonus for renewal of my Verizon account I got a free vehicle tracking device. The app not only shows the vehicle location it provides local nearby gas prices by station and other information that is helpful.

Disable the car, but please don't leave equipment (especially guns!) in the car. That's just begging to get robbed. When I've traveled with gear in the past, I've always unloaded stuff like that into the hotel room.

I definitely have to agree, I never leave gear in the car. Back in my playing days if I had a rehearsal after work, the guitar was coming into work with me.

Yep, I spent many a day with a guitar under my desk at work back in my gigging days. I also made sure that, during load in/out at gigs that we had one person in the parking lot and one by the stage the whole time we were loading. Even then, I locked my car every time I walked away from it with a batch of gear.

Mugger did not know two of my friends were behind him.

I appreciate the input but I am surprised by some of the responses.
After the “Vegas” tragedy, I can just see the reaction at the front desk and lobby as I carry two sheathed shotguns and my deer rifle into the elevator and on to the room. The 44-mag always comes to the room. It’s not that unusual in the west to see hunting firearms so I’ll make the extra trip. The music gear is replaceable and won’t be used by some crazed fiend to kill people. All firearms and gear are well documented.
I’m more concerned with the truck. I usually book motor inns but they are getting tougher to find in SLC. Again, thanks for the input.

I traveled with a couple rifles overnight and took them into my room in a soft shell Dbl guitar case.
Funny thing was in the elevator some old guy, older than me joked about what kind of guns I had.

Heck yes I thought about sticking them in my microphone and PA stand bags.
I challenge all of you “don’t leave your firearms in your vehicle” proponents to stroll through the lobby of a metro hotel with three full gun cases in this day and age. Go ahead.

I was only referring to the instruments, but of course, every thread is a gun thread.

^that’s on me for giving too much info^
I was more worried about losing the truck. The contents can be replaced. I ordered my new truck 16 months ago and still don’t have a production date or VIN. If my current rig were stolen I’d be hard pressed to find an identical replacement for my special order. Any stop-gap measure will cost me.

I've done it on multiple occasions without issue. When I moved across country, I brought in a considerable amount of long guns, handguns, and ammo. No issues. I actually carried a M1 without a case through the lobby of a hotel in VT with no issues. I'd be more worried about some jackhole breaking into my car stealing my guns to commit a crime.

Seldom Seen Keep in mind that even though they are very illegal in the USA - the word is out - jamming devices are fairly inexpensive and readily available in Asia. These can jam civilian band GPS, LoJack, Wifi (many security camera installations) and cell phone signals. The casual crook may not have this but you can count on a gang using this type of device.
