I've been itching real bad to buy another piece of recording gear. Been looking at numerous options. A Warm Audio WA-73 mic preamp is at the top of the list. It's a Neve 1073 clone with a built-in EQ. I would also like to have another Royer R121 ribbon mic so I would have a pair. That's the most expensive. Then there's a mic polarity tester.
Today I settled on the cheapest one of the lot. I bought a polarity tester for testing microphones. $120 at Sweetwater. It consists of a transmitter with a speaker that generates a positive pulse that is held up to the mic. There is a receiver that goes directly in front of one of your control room monitors that has a built-in mic that listens to the pulse from the transmitter through the mic being tested. The receiver then illuminates one of two LED's that lets you know if the signal is a positive or negative pulse. Then you can either track down why it is backwards or just invert it with the electronics in the DAW or mic preamp. Some older mics are pin 3 hot which is contrary to most modern day mics and audio gear which is pin 2 hot. I have a few old mics so I thought it would be a good idea to test them whenever I am going to use more than one at a time. That doesn't happen often for me but it does occasionally. Here's a video that explains it and shows how it works.
