I never paid any particular attention to defects and recalls in new vehicles, since I'd never owned one. My own wake up call was a couple of years ago when I got a defect notice about my 2018 Chevy Trax, my first new car. It involved some inferior welding on a part of the suspension or something, that might cause a steering problem. A new part was recommended, along with free installation. (Dealer didn't have the part, but that's another story)
These days, I'm startled by a revelation that some 2021 Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigators might spontaneously combust even though the engines are off. Owners are advised to park outside their garages at night until engineers can find the time to solve the mystery. "Only" 16 fires have been reported so far, which is encouraging the same way that shark attacks being rare is encouraging .... unless you happen to be the guy frolicking in the ocean 100 feet from the shore, who spots a dorsal fin.
Seems like there are so many things to keep track of any more: bad batch of lettuce, defective run of ammunition, dangerous baby furniture, undeclared peanuts in product ingredients, metal fragments in Skittles, salmonella in spices ....... Remember when we just ambled along in life, assuming that "someone" was seeing to the integrity of the stuff we rely on?

A big part of this perception… and probably the main driver… is that we *can* track things relatively quickly/easily these days.
How long did the Pinto firetrap take to surface?

I get recall information from Toyota, even for products I don't own. These arrive via letters or email. We have a Rav4 and Highlander. Every time I take them to the dealership for service the first thing the service advisor does is check for any recall notice. One more reason to get your car or truck service at a dealership.

In their defense, junkyard Pintos did supply a lot of street rods with IFS/rack & pinion steering transplants.

One of my neighbors lost his house to a Tesla that went into BBQ mode.
