I've mentioned Queenie and my Grandson Carlo before. Carlo is now 15 Carlo was born with Spina Bifida, he will never walk, though with certain braces he can stand and move. He has competed is para-Olympic type sports for several years. At younger ages he was never competing against the rest of the field ... he was competing against world records in the events. Carlo is now a freshman in high school. He had thought about sitting out sports this year, but something changed his mind. As a freshman Carlo placed second in the State competition for 100 meter and 400 meter. Carlo by Larry Madsen, on Flickr They were in town for a few days a couple of months ago. Carlo and I sat in the music room and talked for quite a while. At 15 he is a very amazing young man holding very mature and unique perspectives on life. His physical restrictions (and or course he has had them since birth) compel a thought process most of us never think of or need to come to grips with. Great Job Carlo!

Fantastic.
Indomitable spirit at such a young age is no small thing!
I know several whiney adults who could learn a thing or two from him...

Thanks everyone. At first, we had sorrow and great reservation about Carlo and what might become of him in future life. Being born with a back and legs as screwed up as Carlo's compels pretty devastating first impression. As the years have passed, we have watched and learned how that drive and motivation of the inner self makes the person ... no matter the outward appearances and limitations. It's impressive to witness. Carlo called me a while back wanting to know about guitars. He expresses an interest to learn to play. He stated an intent to earn money to get one. I told him that I would match whatever he came up with (in $$$) and we could make it a somewhat better instrument than what he might afford on his own. It hasn't happened yet. I'm realizing I have a guitar in my music room. One I had bought for my Son JC several years ago. He has lost interest in guitars, after all he is a drummer not a strummer. JC is also a Carlo fan and just might give me permission to pass that guitar forward to Carlo. The one on the left here: DSC_2216 by Larry Madsen, on Flickr

May Carlo have a long and fruitful life.
I know someone with spina bifida. She is currently 37.
