I am looking to buy a name brand, commercial-grade, MIG welder for my work shed. I have been watching Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace for the last 3 years to find one. I don't want anything smaller than 185 amp capacity. 200 to 250 amps is preferred. The going price seems to be in the $1000 to $2000 price category but I don't want to pay that much if possible.
I found two Craigslist listings from the same seller. One is a Miller 185 amp and the other is a Lincoln 250 amp. Both are 220 volt, which is what I'm looking for. They are asking $600 a piece for them so I had to make an inquiry. I emailed the seller asking if they were still available and he said they were but wanted a $50 deposit to hold it for me. I am in Middle Tennessee and he is, supposedly, in Memphis which is 3-1/2 hours away. The email raised a red flag when I read it in that the sentence structures were all messed up and the spelling was terrible. It didn't look like someone who was just uneducated. It also didn't appear to be a Spanish speaking person attempting to speak English. I have been exposed to a lot of that being brought up in Phoenix. Spanish is probably the most common foreign language spoken in Tennessee other than English. When I see a phrase that says something like, "A guy I was that coming out to see it so..." it causes me to be suspicious. Especially when they want a deposit up front. Looks like fraud to me. I emailed him back and told him I did not make blind deposits to someone I don't know online. I also asked him to send me his address and when a good time to meet would be. If it is what I am looking for, I will buy it on the spot for cash. If that is unacceptable we cannot do business.
I hope that doesn't sound like I am being a pretentious jerk or racist because that is absolutely not my intent. I figured that if he wasn't agreeable to sending me his address then he is likely not on the up-and-up.
Does that sound reasonable to "Ya'll?"
