In my limited experience, every time we changed or added a member it also changed the band to some degree. With professional musicians, there is also a question of artistic or commercial motivation. I assume that the existing band members must have had some idea of what they were getting with new member(s) and, unless the newbies were quickly shown the door, were satisfied with the result.
The Peter Green, Bob Welch, and Buckingham-Nicks versions of Fleetwood Mac are all in my music library and interesting for different reasons. The same is true for multiple versions of several others mentioned in this thread, including Journey. While I prefer the earlier version, several million record buyers obviously thought otherwise.

Peter Cetera. Pushed Chicago into the soft ballad space-which always sucks. You get one or two hits and that's the path forward-how can we do that again? To me they all started sounding the same.

We (Musicians) don’t listen to music with the same ears as the general public.

Turned on the tube this morning and the first thing I saw was Scott Stapp’s mug. Now, there’s a cat that ruined his band. I was never a fan of them, but he certainly ruined the good thing they had going. Do you prefer Alter Bridge?

He was there from almost the beginning. I don't think his arrival changed that band, but rather letting the songs he wrote get through.

I felt after Terry Kath died, Chicago changed a bit and Ceteras influence became more prevelant . Makes sense ,but I liked what Kath brought to the table.

I’m not a fan of either, but if you hog tied me and made me choose, I reckon I’d go with Alter Bridge.

The guy who shot Dimebag really messed up Damageplan and pretty much killed Pantera for good.

The guy who shot Dimebag really messed up Damageplan and pretty much killed Pantera for good. That happened in my town. I'd frequented the venue in the past.

I would never have pictured you as a Pantera fan. My oldest daughter skipped rap and hip hop and went straight to metal -- I was OK with that and listened to whatever she was listening to. She's got pretty got pretty good taste in music.

Both sound like they are trying extremely hard to poop when they sing.

Gino Vanelli ruined Quicksilver IMO. Their first two albums done while he was in jail were great, with him not so much

I stand corrected sir! I had to look it up, I think Vannelli would of stunk up the band as well !
