Challenge accepted. If anyone was wondering what that awful sound coming from my house was this morning, we were not torturing a flock of geese. It was me playing my trumpet for the first time in probably a decade.

Sadly this reminds me that we have a shortage of trumpet and buglers in our military today. It's so bad that standin players are being sent out with a programed instrument which contains a small speaker and battery powered amp inside.

I’m a former trumpet play as well. I know where my trumpet is. 🤔

there is a volunteer organization that provides buglers/trumpeters for military funerals...
i had plans to do this until covid. i had forgotten it, but your conversation reminded me... thanks. also, tomorrow at 3 pm eastern, it is hoped that anyone that can play TAPS on any instrument will do so. the last 2 years i've played TAPS on a TUBA that belonged to one of my best buds that was killed in an agricultural accident 3 years ago.

I picked up an antique bugle thinking I could learn taps, not as easy as I thought it would be. I should keep at it. I can almost cover it with a conch shell though, but it wouldn’t be as respectable or traditional as the bugle.

Yeah I saw a story about it this morning. It's what inspired me to dig out the trumpet. Not sure if I'm gonna participate or not though. Maybe my best contribution to Memorial Day would be to keep away from my trumpet.

I was still able to hit all the notes, but man did it sound bad, lol practice buzzing on the mouthpiece by itself for several days. buzzing slow, soft scales... don't press or force. just put the mouthpiece to the lips and start blowing softly, increase the air until the lips buzz BY THEMSELVES... you're blowing the lips open and causing them to vibrate instead of forcing them to.
after you do that for a while, pull the tuning slide from your horn, put the mouthpiece into the horn and buzz the same for a few days. when you finally put the tuning slide back in you won't believe what you hear!
just don't force it... it will happen naturally... and will sound better. a lot of forcing sounds pinched. This guy does a good job of explaining how.

At one time, I was learning to play the Highland Pipes. I'd made pretty steady progress by the time I wound up packing it in, for one reason and another.
Can't imagine what sort of auditory atrocities would result if I were to try playing a set now, 30 years later.

If I were going to play the trumpet, I think I’d play something a bit more pleasant like some KC and the Sunshine Band.

I purchased a trumpet for this purpose a few years ago, but haven’t pursued it yet. I should get off my butt and do it.

The trombone I played in grade school has been stored in my attic since I moved into this house. I could play play Taps pretty well according to my music teacher -- but he's probably dead now, so I can't prove that.
The horn hasn't seen slide lube for at least twenty-five years. The slide doesn't need to move to play Taps but my lips need to be in shape -- they aren't.
I should probably go up and get it at least to give it some TLC.

Taps -literally the easiest thing to play in trumpet.
1. Pick your valve(s) 2. Play Taps
