I am considering selling my U89 and I'm not sure the date it was manufactured. The U89 is not as common as most of their other models. I can't remember when I bought it exactly. I bought it from the original owner in the late 80s and I think it was pretty new then. I got it for less than 1/3 the price because this guy had knocked up his girlfriend and needed money fast. At least that's what he told me. I did a lot of Google searches and the only thing I can find for a serial number reference for Neumann mics is for U87s. I thought I'd contact Neumann directly but Neumann USA comes up as Sennheiser USA and it takes me to their website which doesn't reference Neumann in any way.
I can't make up my mind about selling the U89. It doesn't have a specific character like many of their other models do. It's pretty flat. What goes in is what comes out. I do know that it will give some serious guts to a thin or tinny acoustic guitar. It tames the high end very well and I may keep it just for that. The only drawback is that I don't really need that sound and for what I could get for it I could buy another very nice mic....or two. I could probably buy a Neumann TLM67 for what I could get for it. The TLM67 is the transformer-less FET version of a U67. That's a superb microphone.

I got a reply to my post at Gearspace. My U89 appears to have been made in late 1982 to early 1983. That classifies it as a vintage U89 which makes it all the more valuable. Especially since it is in absolute mint condition.

I listed it for sale online today. Hopefully someone will buy it before I change my mind.

I contacted Neumann and my U89 was manufactured in 1982. Since 1981 was the first year they were manufactured that makes mine definitely "vintage."
