I found a Morgan Monroe 00-TBV Blues 32 "with case" on CG used gear last week. I called the store and had the guy give me a description. He mentioned that it might have a fret that needs dressing but I figured, easy enough to cure, so I dropped the $300 or so and had it shipped to my local GC.
When we opened the box, suprise - no case. I thought, well it still looks nice and maybe they will discount for the missing case. I had the clerk look up the original listing and sure enough it said case included. As he was doing that, I tuned it up, and not until I had it to full pitch could I get a single note out of it that wasn't totally fretted out. I looked at the neck and then to the bridge, and found the saddle had been lowered to the point that the high E was touching the wood on the bridge. I passed it back to the clerk and showed him, and told him to credit me back for the purchase as it had too many problems. He gave me my money back, minus the shipping. I thought, that's cheesy, but he was not too bright so I wasn't going to argue with him over $22.
Curious to know what went wrong, I called the store where the guitar came from and talked to someone in Used Gear, and told him what happened. He looked up the listing and was surprised to see it listed with case, since he knew it had none. I started talking to him about the possibility of getting the guitar at a discount because of the issues. Then he looked up the guitar's history and found that it originally had come from another store and was returned because "the neck was warped" (which would explain someone trying to make radical adjustments to the saddle). And apparently whoever returned it kept the case since he knew it went out in one. I told him someone at his store misdiagnosed the buzzy fret problem and he said he was sorry and that his people are supposed to be trained in what to look for when evaluating guitars.
He asked if I was refunded and I said all but shipping. He said since I returned it because it had undisclosed defects they should've refunded shipping as well, and he went ahead and credited me for that.
I've had better experiences with GC Used Gear. I've been looking at some acoustics in the $1000-1500 range but I'm leary about buying anything like from CGUG that now. Kind of like buying a used car at auction. It's buyer beware!
Anyone have good experiences with buying acoustics online from GC Used Gear?
