I've listened to this song many, many times and am always taken away by Nick's bass line.
I am realizing, he is playing an 8 string bass.
Actually, I never realized they were making bass guitars like this.
Better look at about 1:50 in.

Thanks for the videos. Gosh, Rockpile were great. They make it look easy. Those Hamer 8 strings were a thing back then. Tom Peterson was a proponent. He used them quite a bit with Cheap Trick. He currently favors 12 string basses. Great power chord generators.

I've never owned an 8 string bass but they have interested me since a band I liked in the early 70s used one of the old Hagstrom 8 strings. A few years ago, I tried several octave up pedals in an attempt to get that sound but they all seemed too synth-y for my taste.

My Line6 Variax 705 bass has two multi-string emulations, A Hagstrom H8 and a Hamer B12A (3 course 12-string) that are quite good. Two of the better emulations. Our band played Pearl Jam's "Jeremy". However, I usually didn't play the Variax at gigs, because I didn't like the P and J bass emulations.
Instead I played around with my Zoom B3n pedal pitch shifting. It sounded kind of synth-y. Not nearly as good as the Variax, but usable in a live situation. However, I still used the pedal because I also used it for other songs, I hate swapping around basses at a gig and I didn't want to bring an extra instrument for just one song.

I have one. Without frets.
It's fun.
Trouble is, if/when you hit a bum note that octave string really lets everyone know about it.

If you play or played an 8 string, was it with fingers or a pick?

If you have experience with an 8 string, do fingers or a pick work better?

If you have experience with an 8 string, do fingers or a pick work better? IME a pick. I find it helps the octave string cut through with more authority.

I found this to be interesting regarding tuning. I admit this is a copy and paste of a response from another forum.
"Tune an 8 string bass: (notes in paratheses are for the octave higher strings) E(b)-A(e)-D(a)-G(d) Standard tuning with a compound 5th"
You could also do
"C(E)-G(B)-D(Gb)-A(Db) Tuned to fifths, and an compound 3rd! makes for very funky and melodic double stops."

I haven’t plugged in my 5 string in years. I guess I’m more of a traditionalist. I probably shoot my Muzzle loaders more often than my modern firearms, with the exception of .22 and .22LR and mini mags. My favorite vacation is the 10 days I spend at the Alifia River Rendezvous.
A Bassist that blew me away was at this Rendezvous maybe 4 or 5 years ago. He played in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He was doing things with his washtub bass bass I could’t believe. He could play everything on the washtub he could on the concert bass. He even bowed it.
When I got home, I made a washtub bass, ruined a perfectly good washtub. Not an easy instrument to play outside of the 1-4, 1-5 thing.
I’ve had the Ibanez PNB14E-OPN Parlor Bass for a few years now. For a body sized slightly smaller than my standard classical guitar the acoustic volume is good. I can actually use it acoustically with a standard Dreadnought. It’s got better acoustic volume than my fretless Guild B50.

I bought and played a Dean 8-string for a while when one of our guitar players was on a military posting out of town. I was using a pick since we were playing classic metal (Priest, AC/DC, etc). I liked the sound of it initially, but as we went along I realized it wasn't really replicating a "guitar and bass played together." It sounded more like a piano. Then the band broke up, so I sold it on Ebay. It was a nice bass for the price (Dean Rhapsody 8-string - approx. $500), but I didn't think I'd have a need for one going forward.

I’m a five string player, and I’ve always wanted a ten but there aren’t many out there. I’ve been watching Reverb for years, but I think the search terms are hit or miss.
