I decided I needed a doo-dad where I can put 2 mics on a single stand for recording stereo, and, it needed to be adjustable so I could change the spacing between the mics. I have always had to use two mic stands and I don't really have enough space for that. Plus, it's a pain in the xxx to get them aimed correctly. I looked at Sweetwater for an ORTF mount and they had a few different options. The plastic ones were $50, the Neumann one was $200, and there were a couple others that came with microphones for considerably more than that. The plastic one was a non-option for me. I'm not mounting two expensive microphones on a plastic mount, PERIOD! The Neumann one was steel and built well but I'm not paying $200 for one. I decided I could make one that would do the job out of stuff I have lying around. All I needed is a way to screw the mic adapters to it. Sweetwater to the rescue.
I already had a dozen or so of the 3/8 to 5/8 threaded adapters that come with new microphones that will adapt the European 3/8 threads to American 5/8 threads for screwing mic clips onto mic stands. I could use them to rig something up that will make it possible to screw mic clips onto the mount. In the process of digging through my miscellaneous mic clip box, where there are probably 30 clips for different mics, I found a slotted piece of steel that I'm sure was made for mounting stereo mics only it was shorter than I wanted. I have no idea where it came from and didn't know I had it. I went to the shed and brought in a piece of 1/8" X 1" X 6" steel strap that already has a hole in each end. I started screwing things together and WALLA, an adjustable-width stereo mic mount is born and it only cost me $20. I need to dig through my boxes of old gear remnants more often. There's no telling what I might find.
