One of my all time favorite aircrafts. It’s only Achilles heel being the oil cooler on the bottom of the aircraft as was discovered in the Korean War when rifle fire took some out.

This weakness was not as exposed in WWII as the plane was used as a long range escort not ground attack and low level fighter. The low level stuff was usually done by a P-47.

I feel VERY fortunate to say that I have around 20hrs logged in a P-51D, all thanks to a formerly wealthy friend (he lost the plane and a lot of other stuff in the divorce).
I spent that time flying around the Napa Wine Country back in the mid-70's. BEAUTIFUL plane to fly once you get used to all of that torque.

bubble canopy P-47 Thunderbolt is my favorite. But I've never seen one fly in person.

In 2007, we attended the last great gathering of the Mustang at Rickenbacher in Ohio. Many of the pilots and birds were getting long in the tooth so this last gathering was planned. There were over 100 of them with 2 days of festivities and plenty of other warbirds.

My father in law was a Navy Corsair pilot..on the ShangriLa. My Dad was Army artillery. They were my heros but they never talked about the war much.
