Just wondering. Let's say everything else is perfect, no fretwear, but fingerboard (natural maple) has some gunk. Can't get into details, but sent pics to a known retailer, and that was the deal-breaker. I would clean and resubmit, but now question if the buyer knows anything? lol

For me, it would depend on what it was dirty with.

lol, good point. It's really just finger gunk and the store is close enough that I would bring them in. Maybe I'm wrong? This one was an unfinished maple neck music man.

Probably nothing that some naphtha couldn't clean up.

If the fb was gunked up I’d wonder what else might be of concern. If selling/trading it’s always been my stance to put the best foot forward.

yeah, my fault for not cleaning it up, but I thought they would sense that. Trying to add a one drive link, not much luck I always look for fretwear on a used guitar, never thought a dirty fretboard was more concern, but will clean and polish frets for the next attempt Pic

If you didn't know it was gunk on the fingerboard in that photo, it could be mistaken for excessive wear and divots in the surface maybe. Only explanation I can think of. Actually shows an instrument used as intended to me.

Fender Custom Shop charges extra for that kind of relicing service 😃

Could be worse, but really if I was taking pics to sell it I would prolly clean it up 1st. Just saying.

It's a case of the thing might just not be something they want unless it's near perfect, or don't want to roll the dice based on past issues.
I don't buy or use maple fretboarded instruments, so...it's not an issue for me.
Last one I had was a Squier JV that I sold for cash, and it had wear - but that was expected on a thirty years old player's guitar.
Still got several times what I had in it though!

I would not buy a dirty anything. There are too many in perfect condition to take a chance on a dirty one.

I’d clean it up and resubmit.

If it is a retailer looking at it, they should know better. Beyond that, they shouldn't expect to be able to buy a used instrument and for it to be showroom ready. At the very least it should get a clean/test/restring. You don't even need a "tech" to do it.
The only defense I can think of (as Riff Twang mentioned) is if it was mistaken for wear through the finish or permanent discoloration. It might be permanently grey in a couple spots, but it looks like it should clean up just fine.

I think they might have been fishing for a reason to not take it. Just guessing…
I’ve bought a couple guitars that needed some love and care, but only because I knew that another might not come up. My ‘09 Jackson is an example. But it was the exception rather than the rule.
I rarely (almost never) get to out my hands a guitar before purchase.

I agree, they were maybe fishing for a reason not to take. I have sold guitars in similar condition to dealers, as mentioned above, they had enough experience to know they would clean up. Plus, if they said, clean the fingerboard and we'll consider, I would have. I've also sold on consignment and the dealer charged a setup/cleanup/polish to make showroom ready etc.

As a private buyer, no, I would not buy it unless it was a “what the heck, take a chance” price. Prices are crazy high on used stuff and I’d be very picky about condition.

I notice you have not posted a PIC of what exactly we are assessing. Used, worn, showing its age ... is one thing. "Dirty", in my book that's a different thing. Edited to add: I see the PIC now. I missed the link previously.
If that's how it was submitted ... It doesn't look so bad to me.

"Mint condition!" Well, if by that you mean 'urinal mint', then I guess that's an accurate assessment.

It would take at least 20 to get the bio suit, booties and gloves on.
