I’m already saying “sir” and “ma’am” a lot. Sheesh.
I made the big move to Central Texas over the weekend. It feels a lot more relatable than NH ever did, given that I grew up in Illinois. But oy! - the heat!

I'm having a hard time picking up the Texas dialect here around Houston, probably because of all the transplants. But they sure pick up on mine. It's funny how many people think we're from Fargo, or Canada. When we lived in Florida the predominant accent was northeast. It got to the point where I could finally recognize my own accent when meeting people from Michigan.

" But oy! - the heat!" I'm jealous. I really miss the Saskatchewan summers.

i saw the GEEZER question and thought this was DROOLING....
dad was in the USAF and we lived all over... my accent used to be a mess. in college, nobody could tell where i was from by listening. i finally "landed" in southern KY and have lived here several decades. my accent has developed but is still not exactly the same.
i get a kick out of my nephew... he's a native Kentuckian with all the southern drawl. he's been teaching english in japan for several years. i tease him that if/when i hear a person on a technician help line with a KY accent, i'll know it was his student...

I did two months of training in the military at Fort Gordon, Georgia. I had heard the local dialect described as "gumbo," and I think that pretty much nailed it.

We moved to KY in '93 and I've been in the south ever since, but I still don't say "y'all" and people still know that I'm not from down here. I was 40 when we moved south, so I don't know if I'm just too old or too stubborn to change.

I tend to pick up accents very easily and unintentionally. This will be interesting because accents are much more pronounced up here than they were in Austin. But, there’s a lot of outside influence due both to the proximity to Fort Hood and a very large regional medical center that pulls in professionals from all over.
I can go home to visit my wife’s family for a long weekend and return sounding like a Yooper.

i think the local dialects/accents are not as defined/deep as they once were... in ham radio, i talk to people all over the country and i don't hear the stereotypical accents. i do hear some differences... but not the exaggerated drawls presented to us in movies and tv.
television announcers have trained the local accents, for the most part, out of themselves. we hear that and conform

Back in Florida we had a neighbor who is a rare native Floridian. I could not detect a southern accent at all. Her daughter (probably around 50 years old) has a thick southern accent. Who knows how it all works. I grew up in Detroit and suburban Detroit. You move 40 miles north of the city as we did and the kids born and raised there often have a twang, likely as a result of the farming community roots. Our oldest boy and a nephew even picked it up to a degree.

Well, one important rule, I’m told by my south Texas friends, is to pronounce San Antonio as “San Antone” every time and use “ya’ll” a lot. My wife fits in much easier being raised by a Tennessean. The more she drinks, the drawlier she gets. Congrats on the move HD. Now start a rain dance right away.

Hey Michael, I’m Michael and also born into the Air Force, so many post war baby boys were named Michael it’s almost a freakin’ alias. I was 16 when dad retired. We had recently returned to the States after 4 years in Germany, Dad a Col. in the OSI and was Director of counter espionage in Europe. My brother was born in England, sister in NYC, and sister in Wiesbaden Germany. . Dad passed in 1984, he fell down a flight of stairs, alcohol may have played a part. He was retired from the AF at the time and in charge of security of Nuclear Power Plants for Wackenhut Security. I didn’t know until much later that the OSI evolved from the Roswell incident on July 8, 1947. The OSI was created on 2 January 1948 and was initially under the direction of J.Edger Hoover, known as the AFOSI (Air Force Office of Special Investigation) at that time. I’m a little pissed that he never told me about the aliens “o)

i was happier when he was in the AF, moving back to KY didn't suit me. i couldn't understand what people said here, and they couldnt understand me. i thought they were calling me MACK for a long time.
dad didn't say anything about aliens either. us kids were always watching for weather balloons but the only thing we ever found were horny toads, scorpions and tumble weeds... a few jack rabbits too...
one of these days i want go get back there... i've gone there on google map street view and can sorta recognize the basic land marks.
did you ever live there? walker AFB

I’m already saying “sir” and “ma’am” a lot. I've always used ma'am, miss, or sir -- growing up military and all. I'm just waiting for that to bite me in the ass when I can't figure out which you are and I guess wrong. I've also lived all over the country -- South Carolina, Alaska, Texas, Maryland, New Hampshire, and Utah -- and now in MA. I never managed to absorb an accent from any of these places. By far the weirdest accent and vocabulary I lived with was Marylanderish. I'm looking for Peegoo to confirm.

I didn’t get to Roswell until a couple of years ago touring the USA with a good friend driving her RV.
Born in San Antonio TX, then to England, followed by Brooklyn NYC, to Hollywood FL while dad was in Greenland for a year. to Jacksonville FL, my favorite it was wild and swampy. Then to Germany, and lastly Washington DC. Then Pittsburgh when dad was out of the AF.
I rambled around doing odd jobs mostly cooking in dives to 5 star places. Went to a few Universities, but it was boring, couldn’t keep attention. I was more interested in learning stuff I wanted to know about, education without purpose didn’t work for me.
I have been in bands since Jacksonville 1961-64 and started my first rock band in Germany. All those rambling years I was playing nights and cooking day shifts.
I managed to live my life the way I wanted to and wound up in a place I’d call my life long dream.

And welcome to Texas HD. I think you'll be surprised by the extremes from summer to winter. Somehow I dealt with the Florida heat, but man, Texas. 🔥

New Orleans has a few different accents. We were there for a couple of days this year, not enough time to break into the local music scene, and that was a little weird too. You can almost feel the turf war boundries and competitive exclusion.

"But oy! - the heat!"
It's been nice and cool up here in the mountains. Good rain, and I don't think we've seen 80 yet.
I volunteer at out local museum, and we've been getting hordes of Texans, up here to get away from the heat. Every other car has a Texas plate.
But they are very nice, and they like to throw their $$$ around. This little town depends on that to survive.
