My Fallout bass is wonderful! Just got it today. Plays good, sounds good. It is only quiet on the parallel mode. Single and OMG setting there is a very slight bit of noise. NOTHING even coming close to the noise on my SB-2 with Bridge at full or near full. Nor my Squier 40th Anniversary Jazz. You cannot even here it if playing to music. I really like the OMG setting. The single coil setting brightens things up. Both single coil setting and OMG (That is what they call it) setting have exactly the same level of noise but it is perfectly acceptable to me. I am sure if I took my amp off passive setting I would not even hear noise at all. It came settup nicely. Low Action without fret buss except the A string 13th fret (only slightly heard un amped) All other frets below and above that exhibit no fret buzz. The bone nut was decently cut. The sound I get from this bass is much more to my liking with rounds than the SB-2. I ordered a set of TI Jazz Flat JF-324 (shortscale) strings. Below are actual photo's of my exact bass Sweetwater sent me. imgur.com/a/97ULUX0

Nice. I see lots of good reviews of these. I don't have any experience with them (I have a L2500), but I like the body proportions and bridge position that makes a short-scale still approximately the size of a 34 in scale instead of just looking like a "baby" full-scale bass.

Thanks guys. I like this bass much more than the G&L SB-2 I have. SB-2 is like trying to tame a wild horse where as this has a lot of great tones. If you like a lot of grow and high output that rivals an active bass and don't mind trying to find a set of strings that work for you then the SB-2 is the bass for you. It has P and J versions of MFD (Magnetic Field Design) pickups Leo Fender designed. They are nothing like you have heard before on non G&L instruments. I have never before heard Pickups with high output that didn''t go dark before these. The MFD pickup on this bass is a different design. It has Parallel, Single and OMG pickup settings. The settings I will probably use the most are OMG and Single coil. Leo was definitely an innovator! He was able to get deep lows by putting a cap across one coil while the other coil was bright sounding. It give a perceived higher output that is not dark sounding but a more full rich tone. You can't explain it. Just have to hear it.
I forgot to say the tuners and bridge are much higher quality than the vintage style tuners on MIM Fenders. They are heavier duty and very smooth with no slop to them and the fret ends are smooth. Only one had a tiny bur on the end below the fingerboard. Just a light quick brush of a fret file took care of it. No other issues with frets. Only con is the typical cheap asian jack which I will be replacing with a switchcraft.

That's nice.
I looked at those but passed because I already have an MIJ Fender Mustang with upgraded pup (Nordstrand NM4) and figured there might be a fair amount of "overlap" as far as the ground covered by the two. Don't know that for a fact, since I've never had a chance to play a Fallout, let alone A/B one with the Mustang.
Enjoy!

Nice, it’s always cool when you find one that you just can’t walk away from.
it’s been a while since I had a new bass day. It seems I’m satisfied with what I have, I’ve got my Basses covered.
Funny thing, I more often than not I grab the $150.00 Bronco, it was special from day 1. A Guitar Center gem. It was pointed out to me by one of the teachers I’ve known for years. His opinion was it was the best bass in the store at this time. I did swap out the stock pickup, made a router jig for the instillation of the Guild Bisonic pickup, it paired up nicely. 4 of the herd are home made.
Number one is the Guild Starfire. The 1981 P Special gets all the studio time. The Bisonic Bronco gets all the kick around stuff, outdoor things, friendly jams etc.

I haven't owned a Fender P since the early 1970s, when I took an abortive, first stab at being a guitar player who also played bass, so I haven't A/B-ed one with my Mustang (which was acquired decades later). I did have an SX, shorty "P" with upgraded pups (DiMarzio DP-127) but that got stolen. That one would've probably been a closer comparison to a "real" P.
The Nordstrands are noticeably (if not dramatically) more articulate than the stock Mustang pups, but it's more of a nuanced rather than a "night-and-day" difference. The placement of the pups (in a "middle" position along the speaking length of the strings) on both the P and the Mustang should yield some similarity, though the difference in scale length will account for significant difference.
Here's a comparison I found on YouTube. At least in this instance, the P sounds noticeably "punchier" to me. In any case, it should give you some idea:

pbase.com/s1wgeorge/image/172770577I have both a MIJ 94-95 Mustang bass with a Nordstrand NM4 bought in 2019 and a Fallout Tribute purchased two weeks ago. Both are well-made basses and I will likely keep both; the G&L has become my #1 because of ease to play and output. Wide range of tones from the 3 way switch as mentioned. I purchase the Tribute from Specialty Traders for a great price and they still has a couple in stock when I last looked. The G&L is about 1 1/2" longer than the Mustang bass and will not fit in the Mustang case. ~G

Having had the opportunity to A/B these two basses, how much would you say they overlap with/differ from one another sonically when run through the same amp (which is what, BTW)? I'm particularly interested in your assessment since your Mustang is an MIJ and you've done the same pup swap that I did.

My amp set up is GK MB 112 II and MBP 112 extension cab. My Mustang has TI jazz flats and gets a warm Motown sound not unlike a pbass. Not a pbass but close. The G&L has its DAddario rounds it came with and in my opinion can get to active tones (with Leo's MFD p/u, without preamp/battery). I got a set of DAddario flatwound Chromes 45-100, but haven't replaced the rounds yet because the rounds sound so good and aren't hard on my fingers. The G&L has alot more output than the Fender due to the newer design of pickup. The Mustang as you know has a slim Jazz-like neck, the G&L is a little (maybe an 1/8") wider at the nut and deeper but very easy to play. The G&L has an unfinished neck (no lacquer). ~G

Nice looking bass!
In the latter half of the '70s I switched over to shorter scale basses (1966 Gibson EB-3 and 3 modified Fender Musicmasters) My favories were the Musicmasters, one had a pair of Jazz Bass pickups, one a DiMarzio humbucker and one two Musicmaster Bass pickups. The Musicmasters had a covered six string pickup concealed under a black no-pole pickup. They were lightweight and were a blast to play.
That Fallout bass looks absolutely fun!

It is my first short scale bass since the Gibson EBO I bought new in 1974 and sold it within 6 months due to the muddy tone of the single “Mudrucker” it had. An EB-3 is probably better due to the Bridge pickup. It is heavier than it looks though but yes it is fun to play.

I stated above the Tribute bass has an unfinished neck; this is incorrect. It is finished in satin clear. ~G
