I'm expecting a new short scale bass this weekend and this means that I need to sell my sweet 2006 American Deluxe Jazz bass that I bought new when I joined my friends' band to play bass with them for a couple of years.
I've had it configured for a while now with Custom Shop '60s pickups and a passive volume-blend-tone setup. The original active setup had 4 knobs and a side mounted output jack. My passive setup has the output jack in the normal location, and I put a plastic plug in the empty side jack hole.
I like it the way it is now, but is it more attractive to potential buyers to leave in this passive setup? Or should I reinstall the active stuff and sell it as close to stock as possible? The original noiseless pickups are long gone, so the Custom Shop 60s are staying.
...I will post pics of the new bass when it arrives!

My guess is that you would be better off reinstalling the active stuff.

I have an '07 American Deluxe P-Bass, if I was looking for a J bass like that I would definitely want the active p'ups. If they are "long gone", then you can try following the wiring diagrams to re-hook everything to the passive pickups, but I'm not even sure if the bass and mid and treble boosts would actually work. If you don't want that headache, tell the potential buyers you have the parts and will just include in the sale and let them sort it! Jazz Bass Wiring

Reinstalling the preamp will be no problem. I had it installed with the CS 60s pickups previously. I have never actually experienced active pickups (like EMGs) where the preamp is in the pickups themselves. The original noiseless pickups from this era American Deluxe series weren't all that well-regarded. But the CS 60s pickups I have seem to be one of the most recommended j bass pickups sets out there. You guys have me convinced to go ahead and reinstall the preamp. I'll save the passive pots for some other project. ...and thanks for that link! That might save me from having to dig it up later!

If I were buying, I would like the original preamp instead of a passive mod. That it is not original pickups doesn't bother me so much.

I opened up the case today and I still have the case candy that came with the bass - tags, strap, (good) cable, manual. The preamp was there in a little baggie. Glad I didn't have to look too hard to find it! Everything is laid out now ready for the re-installation. It's been years since I did this bass and luckily I plucked the entire preamp out as close to one-piece as possible. All I have to do is solder the pickups and grounds. Easy peasy.
This is going to be a great used bass for somebody considering today's equivalent is the American Ultra series for $2200. New bass is arriving today!

Here's another vote for re-installing the original electronics or at least including them.
I am curious: what color is your bass?
(I always liked the American Deluxe series, particularly the Suhr-era versions.)

I have a 50th Jazz, pre-amp gone, passive fine with me. Hate the bottom jack. Maybe on its way out.

(I always liked the American Deluxe series, particularly the Suhr-era versions.) It's a 3 tone sunburst with a mint guard. I've got a tortoise gaurd too if I can find it. The preamp is back in and it weighs in at 8.1 lbs. With the passive setup it was 7.8 lbs which seems like a really nice weight for a full-scale bass. I've still got to take detailed photos to capture any blemishes. I'd say it's in excellent shape for a 16 year old bass. I'm not sure if 2006 is in the Suhr era. Is it?

When I put the output jack on the front, I never even noticed the plate on the bottom for the original jack - out of sight out of mind.

I'm not sure if 2006 is in the Suhr era. Is it? Nope. I thought 2001 is the cutoff. The Suhr pickups were single pole-pieces. I recall playing a 1998 American Deluxe Jazz at a music store that I fell in love with. I am now at a point in life where I have a bit more cash. They pop up from time to time and I may scratch that itch in the next few years (here's to hoping for one of the unusual colors, but I will take what I can get).
