Powered up my studio today and only had the right speaker working. Hmmmm.... I checked the cable where it plugs into the interface and it was still plugged in. I checked where the feed cable plugs into the back of the monitor....check. I started tracing the cable going back to the rack and found a spot where the pup had chewed through the insulation on the monitor's feed cable for the left speaker. I thought I had them up where he wouldn't bother them but apparently they got his interest anyway. Something else to replace when re-wiring the rest of the rack. He likes to sleep under my desk where the other dogs can't get to him. Looks like I'm going to have to tie the cables up where he can't reach them. That's going to be an issue I'll have to figure out. If this happens again it's not going to be a pleasant day for puppyhood. I am just lucky I have enough bulk cable left to make a replacement. I'm almost out. I had a wolf hybrid pup 20 years ago that was a cable chewer until he bit through the AC power cord on my old Mesa Boogie amp. That got his attention big-time and he never chewed another cable for the rest of his life. He wouldn't even go near one after that.

Hah, that brings back memories of my older brother's house where my band use to jam in the basement. We'd just leave our gear there. Showed up one time to find my guitar cord where I left it, rolled up on the floor in front of my amp. On top of it was a sizable dog pile. Their cat also found the drummer's kick a convenient litter box. Ahh, good times.

He ninworks ! You just mentioned your solution...electronic dog training. Lay out some plugged in spare extension cords under your desk and wait for the yelp. You're welcome.

Our previous terrier (more recently deceased, but no connection to this story) was very determined and once suspected there was a mouse behind our domestic heating boiler. So she bit into the main cable at the back to try to get further in. This produced a minor explosion and flames coming out of the timer on the wall above. The repair was quite expensive. She must have got a serious shock through her jaw, but only sneezed and carried on. She bit through the cable, but the system had tripped out. I don't think she learned anything at all from the experience, or maybe just saw it as an occupational hazard.

I found more cables he has chewed. He chewed almost all the way through the monitor feed for my second computer monitor. It doesn't get used very often so I don't know when he did it. When I powered it up today the screen had only a blue tint on the display. He'd chewed through the red and green wires in the cable. He had also pulled out the power cable from my MIDI keyboard controller and mangled the plug on it that plugs into the unit. I was able to get that working which is a good thing because it's a weird one and I don't have another one like it.
I'm going to have to teach him a lesson. I think I'm going to have to get a piece of old cable and tie his feet together for a few minutes. Maybe that will discourage him from chewing on them. If not, I don't know what I'm going to do. I hate to do that but I have to do something. If I lock him out of the studio room he'll probably destroy the rest of the house. He's about a year old now so he has to learn about what's his and what isn't.

Yikes ! That's as bad as the field mice around here that chew up the rubber hoses on cars. But music cables ? And having to debug more equipment issues ? Zero tolerance here. Good luck with that ! You're far more patient than me...

PD (pronounced like Petey), the pup, got a lesson yesterday. I tied the monitor cable he chewed around one of his front legs and around his neck for about an hour while I ignored him. I hated to do that but he needs to learn what he can and CAN'T chew on. He looked very pitiful the whole time. It made me feel bad but it was necessary. I didn't tie it tightly. Just enough to where he couldn't get free of it and it made him very uncomfortable. Since I haven't caught him in the act I really can't discipline him for it or he won't know why he is in trouble. I'm not going to lock him out of the studio either. It gets too hot for the AC to work in there if the door is closed. Besides, I like having the dogs around. The other two older dogs are fine and don't bother anything. He's just going to have to learn and I'm going to have to come up with a way to teach him that will be effective. If I power up a guitar amp the older dogs leave the room. They know what's coming. The pup hasn't figured that out yet. Look at that face. He's my little buddy. i.postimg.cc/qqDVh80P/PD-Face.jpgThe big oldest dog just before he left the room.
