I like to keep several guitars, but only one bass at a time. At some point earlier in life I convinced myself that the 1.5" J Bass nut was a must have, but I always knew that the P Bass had the sound I was after. I had a sweet Tokai '57 P as a youngster that had a wide fat neck that I didn't like at the time (the one that got away!). Then recently I determined that a short scale bass would also be more ideal for me as I was never fully comfortable with the first few frets being waaaay out there. P bass pickups can sound a little deeper as far as I've heard, but I am definitely OK with the Mustang Bass sound. With the stock flats this thing just pumps out the fundamental notes. I find the tone control on this little bass is very usable for fingerstyle and picking. I could have done without the relic job, but in shopping for a Mustang Bass, this had the specs I was looking for and I didnt have to build it myself. I mainly wanted a Rosewood board, nitro finish, and a weight under 8 lbs. This checks all of those boxes. However the finish still felt like it was drying. It's gotten better over the past few days I've had it, but the neck was super sticky at first. It all seems to be drying out better now that it's not sitting in a box in a warehouse. I've also tightened the truss rod a few times now and it seems to finally be settling in. It'll be sad to see my American Deluxe Jazz go, but I can't justify keeping it. This JMJ Mustang Bass meets my needs better.

My MIJ with Nordstrand NM4s swapped in: I'm nominally jealous of your lollipop tuners...

My MIJ with Nordstrand NM4s swapped in: I'm nominally jealous of your lollipop tuners... Nice! Olympic White with tortoise would have been my first choice in color and I wish the JMJ Mustang was available as such. I didn't know much about the lollipops, but I have gathered that they were a short-lived thing around 1966. I'm on a quest to find the right strings. The stock Fender 9050 flats are a nice, but I need to see what Chromes are all about first. I do think I'll stick with flats, but don't know if I want to go all thumpy or have a little bit of brightness. Curious about those Nordstand pickups. Any comments on them? The JMJ actually comes with Seymour Duncans and I don't find anything wrong with them. This is a well-spec'd bass the way it is.

To my ear, they have a noticeable, but not super dramatic increase in articulation over whatever the stock ones were that they put in the MIJ Mustangs back around 2013. If you like the SDs in yours, stick with 'em.
If you do decide to try Chromes, get the ECB81M (medium scale) set: you need the little bit of extra length due to the string-through bridge. That's what I have on mine. The tension is relatively stiff compared to some other brands/sets, which is what I personally prefer.
And yeah, the lollipops are a cosmetic thing: I just think they look "cool" and "different". Or maybe I'm just a minimalist. But I'm not obsessed enough them to go hunting for a set.

I dig short scale basses and I’ve made a bit of a study on why some work and some don’t - still don’t know why some work and some don’t. When you find one that does, its great. My own basses have 32.5” scales - one fretted and the other fretless. I just got a U Bass and I’m all giddy.

Cool bass! I think Wyman played one on a tour and recorded with it in the early 70s.

I guess if I mostly played guitar I would transition to a short scale bass nicely. I am not a big person (5’8”) with smaller hands but I have grown accustom to long scale and in the end just didn’t bond with the short scale G&L Fallout bass. It wasn’t bad but I needed to pair down my basses and sold it. It was decent sounding but it would have been a “last to go to” bass so it lost the luck of the draw so to speak. Now that I have a new bass I love I am going to cut a couple more…Just which is the question. Other than the G&L SB-2 I really hate to get rid of anymore of them. I like the Fender Player P but have that covered. I will not sell my Fender American Pro Jazz as I love it as much as my new Fullerton LB-100. I don’t want to sell my 2022 Squier 40th Anniversary bass. Except for the tuners are the smoothest they are function and the little bass is a really good product with binding and inlays on the neck. It would be a real toss up between it and the Fender Player Series P. Yes, tuners can be had but these are Gold Plated (Hipshot HB-7 style) and I don’t want to them on it at $54 a tuner. Right now I just have 7 basses and know many have 3 times that amount or more but I just can’t justify all them (according to Mrs. LTB). Yes I can ignore her but it makes for a really unhappy situation. Most who are married may understand. The others would say “Get a new model” LOL 😂 But that is not me. Been together 42 1/2 years and who else would put up with me.

Herself is quick to say “buy it” if I see anything interesting. Somehow I’ve gone over a year since the last one.

Mustang Bass in action:
Here's another example (though this is the Mustang with the P & J pup configuration).
