Recently I bought a Godin Core CT P90 which has a chambered mahogany body with a maple cap. This guitar is built right and the lightness, resonance and sustain are a revelation. The multiple chambers are supposedly "tuned" to a chord inside as per the designer and it is a sweet, fat, blues guitar. In the past I've always stayed away from chambering but according to the designer this new way offers sonic benefits not just weight relief.

Both my Les Pauls have the ultra-modern weight relief. I don't notice any lack, other than the strain of lugging a 12 pound behemoth around.

Yeah, I had one at 12 lbs, made it difficult to stand and play live. Always thought manufacturers were chambering because the cheaper mahogany species were a lot heavier. Thought it necessary to get one built traditionally but after playing two exceptional chambered guitars I am sold on the concept.

Guild Bluesbirds are also chambered. Haven't played a newer model but I have a Corona version -- those and the Westerly guitars are very nice.

I'm not sold on the idea of tuned chambers or them becoming very acoustic - none of the parts are loose enough to vibrate the same way an acoustic top or back would, even a very rigid top/back like on a 335 or something. Also without any ports, I don't see how the air cavity itself can really have a frequency. But, it really does wonders for the tone.
The opposite school of thought to "tuning" it is to say that it is simply a matter of duplicating the mass. So, take your heavier mahogany, drill out chunks until it matches the weight of the nice lightweight piece, use that and you'll have the same thing. I don't fully buy that either, but it seems closer to what is really going on. Gibson has been doing that for a very long time, often without telling anyone. I suspect Eric Johnson is of a similar mind given that his signature model suddenly had some routing on it with the F hole (his previous signature model had weight specs for the body), but I haven't read up on that and can't confirm his thinking.

Gretsch Jets have always been chambered. Here's what one looks like with the top off: This R8 is actually a CR8, meaning it's chambered. It weighs 7.2 lbs. I have a bunch of really superb guitars, and this Les Paul is probably the finest one I own when it comes to playability and tone. It has a certain indescribable magic about it. I don't know what it is, but I feel and hear it.

^^ Not my display case. It's in the PRS studio; I was there recording some tracks for a pal. There are several of these cases on the walls and I hung the Gibson in there, fully expecting some kind of alarm to go off, but none did. So I took a pic.

I’d think that’s a durable offense. 😂
