I brought my PJ with me to Michigan and canoodled one night in a basement jam. Drums, Hammond, another guitarist playing through a Marshall halfstack. The keyboard player does bass with the left hand and pedals and they get big.
3.5 volume on the PJ with a boost from a couple different pedals and I had to reel it in. Something possessed me to install a TO20 transformer a while back, along with a WGS Veteran 10" and a birch baffle. Grab and go my ( | ), this thing is stupidly loud. With everyone gone for the moment I plugged in and cranked it to find the grit. About 7 or 8 before a Strat starts to grind and I could only stand a minute of it.
I'm thinking amp breakup is beyond my reach these days. Even my VHT Special 6 head + a 1x12 cab is too loud for my home.

I have never used one but how about a power attenuator?

You did it because you could.

I was poking around looking at power attenuators. My only experience with one was back in thr late 70's when I used an Altair power attenuator with a Twin. Most of the new ones cost as much as the PJ, lol. EL84s and a 10" speaker isn't my favorite line up for a small combo amp. I bought this back in the day when I still had some applicability. I'm sure the VHT Special 6 and 1x12 cab would've worked perfect for this get-together and the single 6V6 sounds better to my ears. I just didn't feel like lugging 2 pieces that took up that much real estate.
It does make me rethink getting a Princeton Reverb though. Vintage Sound makes a 5 watt/12" speaker version still intrigues me, but supply chain issues has them backlogged beyond my interest.

You did it because you could. Regarding the transformer/speaker upgrade, I think you're 100% correct 👍🤠👍

It’s what we do.

The modern attenuators do a fine job.
Weber Mini-Mass will do the job far cheaper than a PJ.

I have a friend who put an EV speaker in his Blues Jr. Now that was one loud (and heavy) 15 watt amp.

My #1 is a Dr Z Maz 18 Jr. It can get stupid loud but the master volume makes it manageable.

If my Pro Jr wasn't so modified I'd probably sell it off and get a Quilter Superblock US or UK to go along with my Egnater Tweaker cab.

One thing to note on the attenuators is looking for ones with options are in your bests interest - the treble switch on the Webers that you can add is well worth the price of admission.
I've gotten VERY close to the sound of my mic'd HRD using one once I put it through an appropriate IR and a little room verb just on DI (since it can run SILENT) at that point.
It doesn't quite pop like the master on 12 and the volumer about 6.5 with a good ribbon mic, but...nothing replaces that for a reason.

But, does it sound good? I've always preferred a larger, lower powered amp over a smaller, higher powered amp, but that's just me.

I have a Pro Junior IV LTD (fawn w/Jensen P10Q vs. standard tweed/Jensen P10R). A customer just gave me an Eminence Ragin' Cajun. Tempting, tempting. But.....it might get loud. 😁

Meh, I prefer the sound of a Princeton Reverb when it comes to combos with a 10" speaker. I originally bought the amp for basement rehearsals because at the time my VHT Special 6/Egnater was falling short with that group. I think the "boxy" description is apt, especially when doing side by side comparisons to a 12" combo or cab. A pedalboard does make it functional I guess as a grab and go. These days I have little need for grab and go.

Would a PRRI have better volume management than the Pro Reverb? Sometimes perceived volume is a matter of how sharp the tone is, and maybe the Pro Reverb got too barky.

I'm talking about the Pro Jr funky, not Pro Reverb, not sure if that's what you meant. The Pro Jr and PRRI are miles apart. EL84s vs 6V6s, single tone knob vs treble/bass, cab size, etc. I really should have bought a Princeton Reverb (RI or otherwise) a long time ago.

D'oh, I meant Pro Jr. too, but mistyped.
My question was on the theory that sometimes when you have a tone with a lot of jagged edges it tends to overpower the mix even at lower volumes... the giveaway being that you are always either too quiet or too loud and the "just right" never seems to happen. I've run into that with bass rigs sometimes, especially with very loud active preamps. I get that they're not that similar, but it is an interesting thought experiment to know if a larger and theoretically louder amp that is more balanced would sit in a mix better than a smaller and spunkier amp.
So, you need to go spend a bunch of money to test my theory for me. You down with that? hahaha

I wonder what an Eminence 1058 would sound like with that amp.

🤔 🤣
The WGS Veteran 30 functions pretty well in this amp. I'm almost tempted to put the original transformer back in to see how it sounds.

I had an MIA Tweed Pro Jr blue frame that I used at rehearsal. Our drummer called it “The Beast”. As far as attenuators, I used a Rivera Rock Crusher on my Germino Club 40 half stack. That was by far the best attenuator I ever used.

Back around 2008 I was at a big jam, and one of the players (Clark B) had his Pro Junior sitting on a 5' high concrete block knee wall along the back line of the outdoor pavilion. During a break, some drunk goober walked in front of it and got tangled up in the cable. The amp tipped forward and went SPLAT face-first on the concrete slab.
I looked at Clark. Clark looked at me. I looked at the amp. Clark picked it up, set it atop the wall again, and switched it on. It worked fine. It had a few small scuffs in the tweed fabric, but they were probably already there.
Try THAT with a Princeton!

I was surprised yesterday when listening to a blues band (2 axes, bass, drums, keyboards, harp) at a local brewery. Band was set up just inside, aiming out thru a garage door. Guy was playing a Strat thru a SF Princeton Reverb. No mic. I was amazed that 50 feet away, he could be heard clearly. He had it on 5 and boosted with a Fulldrive 2. Maybe I can use mine in a band.

I snagged a NOS 6V6GT for my VHT Special 6. I'm really digging it coupled with the Celestion Blue I relocated to my Egnater cab. I've yet to try plugging the Pro Jr. into the cab but I bet it'll be yooge.
