We're currently at around 100 songs and it's a mish mosh of 'classic rock' stuff from Elvis and the 50's, typical Beatles and Stones stuff, all the way thru to Skynyrd and some 80's Rockabilly, and even some Hendrix, then Clapton and SRV Blues covers, and then Tom Petty, Counting Crows, a couple Black Crowes songs and Men at Work (because the singer is from Australia!). So yeah, it's a bit all over the place!
Anyways, we don't use books or sheet music onstage, so some songs that are not practiced get out of round, then don;t get played at gigs. I'd like to get us to around 80 songs and then concentrate any new songs on stuff from say 1978 forward.
Best way I can figure is to do a vote, have everyone pick 5-8 songs they'd like to see go away forever, and then any songs with 2 or more votes get tossed. The lead singer doesn't wanna be the grim reaper and just say 'these are going', so he'd like to have it be democratized, and so do I.
What do you all do when it comes to this? Are we on the right path? I also suggested that the lead singer include in the email his 'vision' for the band... where it came from, where you think we excel (or don't excel!), and where he'd like to see the band go moving forward, so that idea is fresh in the minds of those making the votes.

I'd be looking at flow and a core set list or three at that point - if you've got 100 songs, you have multiple strong sets with a few 'switches' to kee yourselves or your fanbase happy.
There's gotta be some cohesion or flow at this point - both for your sanity and that of growing an audience.

Marc my friend; there is a certain point of reality which you have to include in any musical decision of that nature. What does your "Fan Base" want, and expect from the band. In retrospect, they are paying the bills.
I fully agree with the "Democratic" approach you mentioned; certain points of view must be addressed before voting. Listen to everyone's point of view; you may discover something you didn't know before.
My opinion, from experience: It's inevitable that at some point in time each band member will get bored and tired of playing certain songs. You also have to keep in mind that a lot of current popular songs are "Covers" of older music; you may not have a choice of what songs to play to keep working gigs.
Suggestion: Keep whatever material you have and reorganize them into different set's. Practice/rehearse the "Set" (not the song); but rotate the various set's when performing different venues. Organizing your music material into different set's will be a project in itself.
