I came across an article from about a year ago that claimed Fender will no longer build guitars with Ash and Swamp Ash bodies due to dwindling supply, some of which is due to the Emerald Ash Borer. EXCEPT for historic/Custom Shop models. Maybe that’s why the American Original 50s Tele is no longer available? 🤔

Mark, Your post prompted me to pull out my 50th Anniversary ash Am Strat. Much has been discussed about them here over the years. It remains one of my favorite guitars. It was a good value for the money and is an exceptional example. Mine happens to be one with all but impossible to detect joinery of the two piece body. Looking back, I was out the door for $1,000 for the new guitar and the commemorative tweed case. Glad I bought an ash Strat when I could easily afford one. It's a keeper.

Warmoth has a sizable inventory of ash bodies. I'm kinda tempted to snag a Tele body just to have one before they disappear.

I have a 54 Ash Thin Skin/maple neck, back when they were only a bit more than a standard and Wildwood and Dave's were doing consigned batches. Didn't connect with it until recently. It's pretty amazing.

No surprise. Western NY around Buffalo and Rochester is littered with dead ash trees after the emerald ash bore beetle tore through in the last 7 years. Incredible damage, millions of trees killed, most of it still visible as the dead trees are still there and obviously foliage free in the summer.

I lost a beautiful ash tree here last year. Most of it was cut up and burned in my wood burning stove in my shop last winter. I have about 20’ of trunk yet. I’m going to see if I can salvage a couple body blanks from it.

I’ve got a 59 thinskin strat from 2007 and a 70th anny broadcaster both with ash bodies. It’s terrible the devastation the ash borer has done to the trees.

I have a G&L Legacy in swamp ash. It sounds great. Always gets complimented.

I suspect sassafras is going to be the ash alternative.

I’m still building ash-bodied guitars to sell as my body supplier still has access to some nice ash. I’ll continue as long as I can.

I suspect sassafras is going to be the ash alternative. That will be perfect for playing the following song. Although it's not nearly as available as sassafras, I used catalpa wood to make a single piece strat style body a while back. It's pretty light and looks nice with a natural finish.

Maybe I'll buy a lightweight swamp ash Tele body. I have a Baja tele in ash, but it's pretty heavy. I suppose it's the non-swamp variety. Otherwise I love it.

I suspect sassafras is going to be the ash alternative. I would not be surprised. The fact that they used sassafras on some early '54 strats, and more recently on the Eric Johnson "Virginia" strat reissue, should lend it enough credence with the cork sniffing fraternity.

We're still getting ash for the Fiore model below, but I've noticed more and more worm holes in the rough cut stuff. I suspect there will be a point that what is available is just too wormy for translucent finishes. Perhaps wormy ash will become trendy just like these so-called "barncasters" you see of knotty pine. Twenty five years ago, #3/utility-grade wood was considered too nasty for guitars, and now it's a thing. Gretsch tried it in the 1950s with their Roundup models, and they failed miserably at the time.

I’m concerned that maybe I should have cut up that trunk last winter/spring. There might not be a body blank in there now - in which case I hope the wood is still solid enough to burn hot.

Hmmm, looking at Warmoth's ash Tele body inventory the majority in stock stuff is listed as "3 piece/multi piece for solid colors", a category I've never seen before at their site.

Most of the Fiores now are three pieces. Once in a while we get some nice lumber and can make two-piece bodies, but this is becoming a rare thing.

Sounds marketable to me. Maybe they should be making guitar bodies with it.

Our street was lined with nice big ash trees a few years back. All are gone now . All we have now are the motley group of sapling replacements. Talk about changing the look of the neighborhood .

From the Sweetwater siteIt appears that the G & L ASAT guitars that used to be made of swamp ash are now made of sassafras.

Ashes in the UK / Europe are taking a hit from ‘ash die back’ fungal disease. Hopefully there’ll be some ash strains that are resistant to it. Unfortunately it looks like the inevitable will happen and that beetle will find its way over here and finish those off too.
With globalised diseases and climate change, things may be looking a lot different pretty much everywhere in another 10 years.
