Working on a song from a recording project I'm doing for a client today. Having too many technical problems. Pro Tools keeps crashing but I think I figured out why. I hate technical problems when I'm playing and recording. The technical issues are a huge distraction that I don't need when making up parts and trying to work the bugs out of playing them. It's now about 10:30AM and I have been going since about 5:00 this morning. I think I'll go run some errands and come back to it when I return. I'm frustrated right now and that is a hinderance to both creating and playing. I need a reset.
I shall return!!!!

Yeah, the downside of being artist/producer/engineer. Sometimes the hats all fit, but when they don't because of tech issues it can be a real downer to the creative process. Knowing the technology can be a plus when you can anticipate a particular musical approach because of that knowledge. Sometimes those 2 skills intersect nicely, even with my limited knowledge of Pro Tools and supporting software. But there's not much you can do when things like crashes occur, other than putting on the dedicated techie hat.

The same technology that simplifies a process can also become the reason why we hit a brick wall. That is so frustrating. There is something to be said for keeping things simple.
It's probably the reason why I really have no use for an amp that has more than about five knobs. The "buttonology" necessary to make things work often gets in the way of being creative when spontaneity is king.
Walking away from it for a bit is a huge help.

Sometimes I find myself thinking about going lo-tech with a mic and acoustic guitar. Several years back I set my phone on a couch pillow and recorded "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" with my cheap Yamaha parlor. I then imported the mono track into Pro Tools, added a little EQ and reverb.
The same 5 friends on FB gave it a thumbs up as they did my more grandiose efforts, lol.

After i got back from my errands I didn't have any more technical problems. I spent the rest of the day on figuring out and recording parts. They're not performed as well as I'd like them to be but I have them figured out and that's the hard part. The rest is just practice for my rusty chops. Once I get all the bugs worked out like buzzing notes, string squeaks, and miscellaneos open string noises that didn't get muted, I'll record them and be done with it. I haven't been practicing much this summer and it shows. the good news is I played guitar almost all day long and that's a good thing.
