I had a guy come in today with an old Yamaha with 5 or 6 cracks on it. He asks for an estimate. I look at it, and it is greasy and shiny all over the cracks. I'm pretty sure I know what it is, so I ask him. He says "vaseline, I put it on as soon as I saw the cracks!" I ask him why, and he doesn't quite know, but he did it about a year ago, and it still had globs all over it. I tell him that vaseline is a good thing to put on wood if you never want glue to stick to it. I gave him an estimate that he didn't like, and said he'd shop around. Luckily I didn't have to work on it. The stuff probably acted like a rub on finish and even if I spent an hour flushing it out with solvent, I don't think it would clean out enough to have a glue joint I feel like I could warranty.
Putting vaseline in your crack might help if you're chaffing when you're running or dealing with some hemorrhoids, but please don't put it in guitars. Please. Don't.

That is a new one!
Yeah, I would've told the guy it was unrepairable because he smeared grease into the wood. The fix would probably exceed the value of the guitar anyway.

In retrospect I should have just refused it, but the estimate I gave him was effectively a "total", so I think I'm safe.
I did have one guy years ago bring a guitar in saying "I saw the crack, but I made sure to put lemon oil on it as soon as possible!" I don't remember what happened after, but he ended up not leaving the guitar so I didn't have to deal with it. In that case, I blame the fingerboard oil micro-industry that oversells their product with stuff like "nourish and protect" and how it supposedly protects from dry weather damage.
Most people these think cracks are fixed with "bracing"... I get semi-regular phone calls asking "what do you charge to brace a guitar?" when they're actually asking for a crack repair. I'm not sure they realize the crack itself gets glued.

My proctologist advised my to stop confusing the toothpaste with the Preparation H.

^^^I remember a TV commercial for Preparation H waaaaay back when I was a wee Peegoo, and it horrified me.
The reason is the 'doctor' in the commercial stated Preparation H shrinks swelling of hemorrhoidal tissues; as he said "shrinks swelling," he had his hands about 12" apart and moved them to about 8" apart to illustrate the shrinkage effects of the medication.
Little me had a vivid imagination. A 12" hemorrhoid seemed like a nightmare scenario better handled by a qualified doctor rather than smeared with some $3 over-the-counter ointment from the Rexall's down on main street.

Ha. A nurse suggested I might have hemorrhoids in my 30s and said "they are no big deal honey. I have one that often falls out and I just stuff it back inside." Hmm... I didn't say anything but thought to myself, was that a hemorrhoid or a worm ? I'm not so sure she wasn't pulling my...er...roid. I do remain scared that she was telling the truth ! If so, I hope she got a truck load of PH or got treated soon after telling me her...er...tale. Thanks a lot for reminding me...
