i was gifted a guitar kit...strat, and I'm going to finish it with Tru Oil....This will be a first for me. I've watched a couple of video's...and its certainly not out of my comfort zone....
one question though, and I didn't notice it on any of the video's I watched...do you also treat the pick up cavities and such?..I know they will be covered by a pick guard..
any advice, do's and don't is appreciated...

That’s really your choice. I usually don’t finish pickup cavities unless I’m painting a body. Then they get done just because they’re there.
I don’t let anything get in the neck pocket no matter the finish method I’m using.

I'd do the top of the body under the guard because there is no reason to stop and where you think the guard will be. The cavity may have a lot of router fuzz and weirdness in it that would make finishing it difficult. If you decide to finish in there, you may want to just do it with the first coat but not bother with any of the building coats. I certainly wouldn't bother trying to get any sort of semi-gloss out of the back of a cavity.

its too bad the pickups and controls are pretty low budget...normally I would replace them but since this is my first one, I'm gonna let it slide...

I'm not suggesting that you do this but since we're on the subject I thought I'd share this link. It's one of a series called "Archtoppery" by Ken Parker. I have yet to watch them all but he's great and the vids are very informative.

ok..so ive got 3 coats on it.....and sanding in between.....but it was really only after the first coat that it needed it ....so I'll hit it with the 0000 steel wool, every 3rd coat and go from there
