Recently I have been looking for an affordable, AKA inexpensive, 1x10 guitar speaker extension cabinet, for a surplus Jensen speaker that I have left over from a previous project, and have been put off by some of the crazy prices being asked for so many of the offerings. So I decided to take matters into my own hands and make one. Please keep in mind that I certainly don’t claim to be an expert craftsman. However, all things considered, the end result seems to do the job just fine at least until I can find something better. ibb.co/GpjNW6Q

I imagine every low note goes "boof".

I imagine every low note goes "boof". Or blows the back off the thing

It actually did not sound that bad at all. Update: I was able to find a Blackstar HT110 speaker cabinet, for a decent price at Musicians Friend, and grabbed one of the two they had avaiable. It arrived today and I pulled out the existing speaker, as it was a 16 ohm version, and installed the 8 ohm Jensen. Sounds pretty good. I was just having a little fun with the cardboard box thing and I hope that some of you found it amusing. Thanks for looking.

Yeah, I'm sure while the cardboard still has its stiffness it probably is JUST good enough to sound decent, albeit not a balanced tone. It makes for a great experiment, if nothing else. And hey, maybe you want to record something later that has a lot of "boof". The first job of a cab is to hold the speaker, and the second job is to prevent the sound from the back of the speaker mixing with the front, and it is doing both of those things for you.
I'm thinking if you had that set up long term and had something inside under the magnet to support the weight so it isn't all on the "baffle", it could last a little while, too.

Look 28 threads down for "Tone is in the foam".

Look 28 threads down for "Tone is in the foam". Thanks for the suggestion Larry. Very interesting and educational from a most practical perspective. That boy certainly does a deep-dive into a subject that I would imagine that most would not put as much thought into. So I suppose that my cardboard speaker box was not as far out there as I thought; LOL.

Glad you found something that works for you without Killing the pocket book! Yes the cardboard box was humorous 😁

Laugh at cardboard if you like, but you can easily and cheaply make a flat-panel speaker from cardboard or foamcore and one or two audio exciters. The sound quality is Mind. Blowing.
I've been playing with these things for about 10 years and it is a lot of fun. I've even used foam trays from the butcher shop to experiment with small speakers and they are astonishingly good as far as sound goes. In the looks department, however, there's a hillbilly thing going on.
Here's a good rundown:

Makes sense. MDF is considered great for some applications because it is sonically pretty dead. MDF is basically super hard cardboard.

I've been considering buying a pair of matching acoustic guitars (probably will be classicals because they're more lightly built that flattops), and turn each one into a DML speaker using audio exciters mounted inside. Obviously I'd take the strings off.
But what really has me intrigued is this: will an acoustic guitar recording, played through a guitar DML speaker, sound more like a guitar being played in the room than when played through conventional speakers?
My intuition says yes, but I've been wrong many times before. May be time to spring for a pair of something Chinese off Scamazon...

Peegoo if you do go ahead with your DML speaker experiment let us know the results. I'm curious
